ok folks,i leave on dec 26th at 7 am ,i run rt 77 south to wytheville va and usually stop there for my first night.my problem begins on my second day.i leave wytheville va and run to walterboro south carolina.on this run when i get to columbia south carolina its usually around 11 am,77 stops here and i pick up rt 26 east to 95 south.its a slow crawl ,3 hours or more on rt 26(52 miles)!!!then its a crawl on 95 south, stop and go till i crawl into waltorboro for the night.my thoughts are how about rt 21 out of columbia ,it runs south to yemessee south carolina and meets 95 .has anyone run this route 21 south ?is it ok for pullin 35 fiver?plus or minuses?just trying to take away some of the stress of people passing me in the grass and cutting me off for 50 miles.the run to the keys is basically the same stop and go from florida city to marathon.sorry this is dragging on ,just looking for alternatives. buckeyebob

Rt 21 in SC is fine for pulling. I drive that way to Columbia and it saves a few miles. Big rigs from the ports go that way as well. Not a lot of fuel stops so top off before Columbia or have enough to get to the GA state line. Do fill up before leaving SC, fuel in GA is higher.

You are travelling at the peak of "snowbird" season so traffic will be heavy wherever you go.

But in general, I-75 and the Turnpike will be better choices than 95. In general, anything is better than 95.

Hope you have reservations in the Keys.

P.S. And for those who haven't experienced this yet:
The Florida Highway Patrol has different procedures for accident investigation that any other place in the country.
Other places: 1) Take care of the injured; often requires closing the whole highway. 2) Re-open as many traffic lanes as possible. 3) Investigate the cause of the crash and remove remaining vehicles.
Florida: Close all lanes. Keep them closed until all 3 steps are done. OR do 1,3,2 which results in about the same thing. This results in delays that are WAY longer than necessary a lot of times.

I don't know anything about the roads up there but why not I-75 south to the Florida Turnpike(south of Ocala FL) and that drops you right on the highway to the Keys below Miami. There is a turnpike fee but I think it cuts a lot of miles off and the traffic is free flowing almost always.
