ohio to florida keys

Just in the planing stages for our trip from ohio to the florida keys. Which route do you recommend 75or 95. also good campgrounds to stay along the way.
  • I usually take 75 to the Fl Turnpike, and take the Turnpike to Homestead. Go online and get a Sunpass before you leave. I've come back 95 one time and it was a mess. The Turnpike was fine. I've only had one problem going through Atlanta and I've been through there 20 times at least.

If you want to go 95 you will have to go to Knoxville, take 40 east and go through the mountains. I try to avoid that route.
  • Iam glad some people here know what iam talking about. We will be leaving cincinnati and will prob make it to Valdosta for the first stop. Then into florida, looking for places to stay also
  • I live in a suburb of Cincinnati. I will never again go through or around Atlanta. I've tried Sundays, and any time of day but after dark. If it isn't a wreck that stops traffic, its construction. And nobody will let you in when you come to the inevitable "right lane exits" signs.
I cut over to I-65 in Louisville and take it all the way to the Florida panhandle. Then I-10 East to I-75 for the west coast of Florida or I-95 for the east coast. I-65 is a good road and not nearly as crowded. Is it longer? Yep. But my blood pressure is a lot lower.
  • Last year we did this trip. I took I-77 into Charlotte, Nc. Picked up I-85. We stayed around at Georgia RV park for a few days just of I-85 visiting my sister. From ther I took US 441 into anthems then picked US-129 into I-75. This route avoided Atlanta and was a good road to travel.

On the way down we stayed at Fort Chiswell in Wytheville, Va. There is also a KOA there as well. Easy on and off of I-77. Georgia RV park only $25 a night. From there we stayed in Ocala Florida for a few days visiting friends. There is a lot of RV parks in that area. From there we went Fort Meyers Beach to the Red Coconut. Spent 12 days there, then onto the keys. In the keys we stayed in Marathon at the Jolly Roger.
  • A lot depends on where in Ohio you begin your journey. If you live in the western part of the state and are going to central or western Florida I75 may be best. If, however, you live east (we are one mile from I77)you do have options. We use I77 to South Carolina and then cut over to I95 and depending on where we are headed from the Jacksonville area, stay on I95 or angle across to I75. That's just our preference.
  • I'm a bit confused...how do you take 95 from Ohio to Florida (or from Ohio to anywhere)? :h Upon reflection, I guess you must mean mainly in Florida—basically whether to stick to the ocean or the gulf side.

I personally would prefer I-75, but that's mainly because I'd get to visit my mom who is now living in Ft. Myers. Even though she's a wonderful lady, that's probably not of great interest to you for your trip.

Ft. Desoto, a county park in St. Petersburg, has a beautiful campground, some nice beaches, kayaking, biking, etc. It can sometimes be a bit hard to get into; reservations are a good idea, though I think I remember seeing that they do reserve some sites for first-come, first-serve use.
  • Either way is about the same miles and there is some construction on both I-75 and I-95. If you choose I-75 make sure you don't hit Atlanta during rush hour. Go through on a Sunday morning is your best bet. Stay in the middle lanes as some right hand lanes are exit only. How many miles per day do you want to drive? For the first stop (5-6 hours) we usually stay at Holiday Tra-v-L Park in Chattanooga. 2nd stop: Twin Oaks RV Park, Elko GA. (3.5-4hrs) 3rd stop: Quail Run RV Resort Wesley Chapel FL - (4.5-5 hrs). For the last stop you can find a spot in Naples FL or if you want a true Florida experience, look up Ortona Lock & Dam Campground on FL Hwy 80 near LaBelle FL. www.recreation.gov search for Moore Haven FL. Nice campground water & electric no sewer. See if you can reserve site 40. Pull thru on the canal. If you have pets do not let them off lease! Alligators in the canal. You can then take FL Hwy 80 east to Clewiston and take US27 south. Hwy 80 is a 2 lane hwy but a good one. that last stop is about 3.5 hours from the last stop and about 5 hours to Key West. Maybe someone else can give suggestions for I-95 so you can compare. Have a great trip!!
