Oregon 6 out of Tillamook, Oregon

We are at Yachats on US 101 and looking at heading up to Tillamoook. After that we are thinking about taking OR 6 east to Portland and heading toward the Columbia River Gorge. Any thoughts on taking a 40 ft motorhome and toad on this route over OR 6?
  • It all depends on timing.... 26 into Portland does suck during commute times isn't terrible at off times.
  • Thanks for the input. I think we will go through Astoria and Longview.
  • I would head to Astoria .. make sure you stop at Canon Beach on the way. Your rig won't have a problem on any of the routes you select heading to Portland - it boils down to how much time and what you want to see/do. Most of the State Parks on the coast are outstanding.
  • Highway 6 is fine and I travel it a lot. The eastern slope is a little rough due to the road sinking a bit so take it easy once you crest the summit and head down. The rough section is about a mile in length.

  • The Astoria route is certainly a good one. Alternatively, you could return south on 101 to Hwy 18 (by Lincoln City). Take that to McMinnville and visit the Evergreen Aviation Museum (home of the Spruce Goose and lots of other stuff). We were allowed to stay overnight in their parking lot, but there's also a nice RV park right next door. Then continue on 18 which merges into 99W. At the town of Sherwood, take Tualatin-Sherwood Rd over to I-5. Go south on I-5 for just one exit and take 205 around Portland up to I-84.
  • I agree with donn0128........Taking a rig down thru middle of Portland is a NIGHTMARE. Take the Longview route......
  • 6 is fine. But to avoid Portland traffic you might consider heading north to Astoria and take 30 east to Longview, cross the bridge and picj up I5/I205 south to I84 east. A lot less traffic. Coming in on hwy6/26 puts you into the middle of down town Portland and unless you hit it right traffic is terrible.
