Either studded or they have the little mountain/snowflake symbol on the side. Snow tires would certainly be designated as traction tires with the symbol, but some regular tires are too - BFG AT/KO2 is one example.

"Retractable studded tires" are tires with embedded studs that retract to at or below the wear bar of the tire and project not less than .04 inch beyond the tread surface of the tire when extended. The tire industry expects to test market retractable studded tires in 2008 followed by a broader product rollout in 2009.
"Studded tires" are tires with studs that are made of a rigid material that wears at the same rate as the tire tread. The studs must extend at least .04 inch but not more than .06 inch beyond the tread surface. Studded tires are only legal for use in Oregon from November 1 through March 31.

I have used all 3 on non-mountain roads and NOT towing. While studded tires and "winter" tires are good, they are nowhere near as good as chains on icy roads or deep snow.

My suggestion to RVers is get off the road and dry camp for the next 24-48 hours !

traction tires are like most vehicles use for non paved roads. they have large deep spacing between tread lugs. for grip in mud and snow. if you don't have mud and snow tires. then you need studded tires and chains.
even with mud and snow tires, carry chains as you may need to use them, if conditions get bad. chains also help in deep mud...

I was a Boy Scout, I carry chains 24/7/365 in both the TV and the 5er. That way I don't need to locate come winter.
We make plans for trips to the coast each winter, short of Freezing Rain I will likely head out.

yes, the trailer require chains on at least one axle (both sides).

Traction Law (Code 15)

During an active Traction Law, also known as a Code 15, motorists will need to have either snow tires, tires with the mud/snow (M+S) designation, or a four-wheel/all-wheel drive vehicle — all tires must have a minimum one-eighth inch tread. You can also install chains or an alternative traction device (like AutoSock) to be in compliance with the law if your tires aren't adequate.
Find out if your tires meet the minimum one-eighth inch tread requirement by taking the Quarter Test.

Passenger Vehicle Chain Law (Code 16)

During severe winter storms, CDOT will implement a Passenger Vehicle Chain Law, also known as a Code 16 — this is the final safety measure before the highway is closed. During a Passenger Vehicle Chain Law, every vehicle on the roadway is required to have chains or an alternative traction device (like AutoSock).

Fines

Motorists driving with inadequate equipment during a Passenger Vehicle Traction or Chain Law could be fined more than $130.

If a motorist blocks the roadway because they have inadequate equipment during a Passenger Vehicle Traction or Chain Law, they could be fined more than $650.

Come to southern Arizona and you will not have to worry about this ! :-)
