Haviland Lake CG is the most popular Forest Service CG in southwestern Colorado. The electric-only sites are $39/night and the non-electric, no hookup sites are $30/night. Not exactly an inexpensive campsite for an 8-hour overnight stop.
There is also Haviland lake Ph (877) 444-6777 campground run by Forest service just north of Tamarron on 550. - NMDriverExplorerTry calling Ft Lewis College (877) 352-2656. On google maps there is a 5er parked in the stadium parking lot with a truck attached and what looks like a horse trailer or travel trailer across from it.

Also, the CHP will definitely check you out during the night if you park anywhere along the roadside of US 550.
You might get away with staying overnight at the Purgatory Ski Area parking lot north of Durango. And the NFS Hermosa Creek Special Management Area, also north of town, allows free dispersed camping. But you may have to go a few miles off US 550 on a Forest Service Road to find the dispersed camping area. - bfast54Explorer

Thanks for all the info. Looks like I will pass on Durango. Looking on Google Maps, saw a very wide pull off at Pinkerton Hot Springs about 15 miles north of town. May sleep there. Yes I could stay at an RV park but want to get started early. Would not make any friends cranking up at 6:00 am.
I respectfully submit that if you pay your money to stay at an RV park and you leave early that is your choice ---and since your gone, the "Friends ",wont see you.:W - LaTrikerExplorerThanks for all the info. - AllworthExplorer IIDurango-ites (or is it Durango-uns) have no sense of humor. You may have to pay for this one. There are a couple of nice RV parks just North of town on the Silverton Highway.
- HeisenbergExplorerLaTriker, We have never been able to overnight in parking lots in Durango. In 2014 we went west of town on 160 and found a parking lot at Ski Hesperus to get some sleep. We were in and out in 7 hours, no one bothered us.
- F-TROUPExplorerI think Durango has pretty much shut down any rv parking, just google it.
- Colo_NativeExplorerI know they DO NOT allow overnight at Walmart.
- path1ExplorerMy mind must be going. I thought I had some info on overnighting there. Turns out I don't, but did this article saved in fav's. And had a dump station, don't know if either is still good.
