Wait a minute now! There is a quarter-mile stretch of the number four lane of I-80 in San Pablo that was recently repaved. It felt real smooth when I drove over it last week. There is also a bit of CA-4 east of Antioch that isn't too bad.........:D

So, this is the route you are planning on taking then?

The climb at Pendleton is long. I don't recall much of anything going down 95. It's been a long time since I have been on that stretch of highway

Those web cams are a quick way of checking out terrain as well as snow. Western states put cams on mountain passes to keep tab on storm conditions.

You can get more roadside details from Google Maps streetview.

So you are thinking 84 to Ontario, 95 into Nevada, and finally 6 into California.

Once you've crossed the Washington Cascades the only mountains are the Oregon Blues, which can be as snowy. Check Oregon Tripcheck for conditions. Once you are past the Ontario/Boise farming area, it's sparsely settled desert like. Jordan Valley is a small settlement with a bit of a Basque heritage.

An alternative would be US97 to Bend, 20 to Burns and OR78 to US95. No mountains this way.

I came north from Ridgecrest last fall. 95 is no problem. Fill up in Marsing or Jordan Valley. The next reliable gas is in McDermitt. From McDermitt on, gas stations are at a comfy interval. The road is great - the only rough portions are the ones that burned in a wildfire a few years ago. And those aren't a big deal.

There are a few passes once you get south of Fallon, but they are all gentle and no big deal.

Fill your tanks again before you leave Hawthorn.

How are you planning to get to 395? I took 6 into Bishop and hooked up with 395 there. Again, it's a good road with no troubles. I tow a 19' travel trailer with an F150.

Big services along that route after you leave the interstate in Nampa are Winnemucca, Lovelock, Fallon, Hawthorn (nice RV sites right on the hwy if you need to stop), and then once you get to Bishop you're out of the boondocks.

As far as snow... The way this year has been going there is no predicting that. High winds can come up at any time along the whole route. I crept home doing about 40 mph because the winds would not let up, and a bigger storm was coming in. Other times have been dead calm and I've cruised along doing 70. There is no predicting that stuff this far in advance.

US 95 turns south out of Nampa, ID not Pendleton.
We have taken US 95 on several trips. It is good highway. Watch your fuel between Nampa and Winnemucca. Station north side of I-84 US 95 interchange has normally good prices.
Been a while since down US 395.
Am guessing you will go US 95 down to Hawthorne, NV then NV 359 over to US 395.

The highway south from Pendleton is US 395. It is a fair road but not he best on either side of John Day, OR. It is very scenic for a slow trip. Could be hard on driver in places.

If it were me, I would take I-5 south to Hwy 58 to US 97 south to Klamath Falls then OR 39/CA 129 to Susanville and then US 395 south to the Ridgecrest highway.

I think this route would be shorter than the I-84 route and less elevation to climb.

Not sure where your Ridgecrest is. Looked it up and the one I found is off US 395.
US 95 has some hills but I donot remember anything to be concerned.
What time of year are you planning this?
Right now, I would be watching the weather and run I-84 to US 93.
