Ruidoso to Cloudcroft, NM via Hwy 70/244

Planning to tow our 5th wheel from Santa Fe to Cloudcroft later this summer. I've driven from Ruidoso to Cloudcroft several times in the past but never while towing. I know from past experience that we do NOT want to take the Interstate to Alamogordo and try to climb the mountain to Cloudcroft from there. It looks like the Hwy 70/244 route from Ruidoso is the best choice, but I wondered how tow-friendly the road is. Google maps street view shows it to be a two lane blacktop with a very small shoulder. Any opinions out there?
Thanks!
  • Thanks, BB_TX! This was my recollection as well. We're staying at Scenic Canyon RV that's actually east of Cloudcroft. Can't wait to get up there.
  • I have driven 244, but not towing. But I would not hesitate to pull the 5er up it. Narrow yes, but overall a pretty good road as I remember it. And the climb is not too much since you are starting out a higher elevation than you would from Alamogordo.
And like you, I would not tow up US 82 from Alamogordo.
