Sisters, OR to Boise, ID

We are doing a trip to the Oregon coast next week, and return travel plans have us overnighting in Sisters, OR. We are at a crossroads as to what way we will take back to Boise. Staying on state Highway 20 would take us through Bend, Burns and Vale and back into Idaho. However, we could scoot over to Highway 26 and go Redmond, John Day to Vale.

Any of you guys driver either of these routes? We have the ability to add another night to the trip, so we are considering either a night in Burns or a night in the John Day area, depending on the route. I appreciate any input you guys might have.

Matt:)

Clyde Holiday State Park is a good stop and 26 is far more scenic then 20.

  • Either way should take about a day of driving. 26 has more ups and downs but nothing scary. If you haven't been that way try it.
  • Hwy 26 is more hilly (if that is a word!). Hwy 20 more desert.
Either road is great. Grew up in Redmond, so have traveled both many, many times!
  • There is a reservoir 20 miles west of Burns. $8.00 per night, no hook ups, but if you want to break up the trip it's not a bad place to overnight. It's called Chicahominie (not correct spelling) it's right on the side of the road.
  • Have driven 20; good road, even some rest areas enroute. There's a private CG in Burns that gets good reviews, and looked nice (and shady!) from the road. Some interesting scenery, especially about 30-50 miles west of Boise.
