I'm currently in Sisters, OR and now I want to go to eugene OR. I know I'm going to encounter some mountain driving no matter how I go, but I'd like to hear ideas about the best way to go. We have a 36 ft class A motorhome pulling a toad. I'm willing to go the long way around (whatever that is) if it will help keep my fear-factor down.Thanks!

You probably want OR126 all the way. In Sisters that might also be marked US20, the main road through town.OR242 is shorter (still meeting up with 126), but has a narrow twisty section where it passes through a lava field. It would be fine (and scenic) in a car, but questionable in an RV.

I agree, you don't want to go through the lava field. I was in Sisters Wednesday this week. Agree with OR126, I went that way home til I got to the fork for Detroit and Salem and went that way. There was some construction on OR126 near the summit where they were widening the road so only one lane was open but they had a pilot car to take you through. Beautiful trip! Was sorry to see Bronco Billy's was closed in Sisters. Good luck!

You can't take Hwy 242 with your rig, it has a length limit. You could unhook the toad and take the toad up to Dee Wright Observatory to enjoy the view. (It's pretty cool) Hwy 20 to 126 is fine. So is Hwy 20 to Hwy 22 to Salem. Whatever you do, don't take Hwy 20 all the way to Sweet Home. Hwy 20 from Tombstone Pass to Sweet Home would not be enjoyable with an RV.

I haven't left Sisters yet, but it looks like 126 is clearly the way to go. Thanks for all the help.

We did go to the Dee Wright Observatory today in our toad. What a great recommendation! It was definitely a highlight of our trip so far. We've been seeing all the lava around, and the trail finally explained why it's all broken up and unevenly scattered. You really get an "up close and personal" view of it.

242 has a 35 foot restriction. Great drive though. 126 is very nice also and really your only choice.

Could it be that I5 is WEST of Sisters? :)

I guess you could go east to US97, north to I84 and then west to I5. Very much the long way around.
