Spartanburg, SC to Sevierville, TN

Travelling I--26 to I40 then on to hwy 411 into Sevierville. I have a toad. How is this route relative to inclines? Any problems coming in on 4ll?
  • When you go west on I-40 out of Asheville, the road will turn north (at Lake Junaluska), and you'll have about 25 miles uphill all the way. The trucks have to stay in the right lane and they'll sometimes get a little slow. Get off on 411 and it's a straight shot all the way into Sevierville.

I think the worse inclines will be north of Greenville and down the hill into Asheville.
  • 411 is doable but keep in mind its curvy and hilly and is used by semi trucks to the Bush Bean factory and Tennessee roads are not the widest I have been on. It widens up about 3 miles past Bush beans, which btw has a wonderful cafe and general store with a museum on the Bush Bean history. I highly recomend stopping there for a great lunch. Don't be intimidated by the curvy hilly stuff, just take your time and drive safe. It will be your best route into Sevierville to miss a big headache in traffic on 66. Exit 432 off I40, it will be 25w/70 (heading west so its the 2nd exit ramp) for barely 1/2 mile then a left turn onto 411. A Dollar General is on the corner there.
  • I-26 has some pretty steep grades North of Asheville but you will miss all that. Like was mentioned, the only real grade you will encounter is near Saluda and it's just straight.

I-40 on the other hand, has some pretty good grades both East and West of I-26, you will hit the worst part of it between US74 and the Tennessee State line.

US 411 is no issue at all

We use it all the time, truck pulling a 36' fifth wheel. It bypasses most of the traffic on the bypass into Pigeon Forge.

  • The only major climb on I-26 or I-40 going that way would be just inside NC, Saluda Grade. It's 4 miles of 6%, fairly straight. There are some more up 'n downs just past there, but the only one of any significance is at Green River, just south of US 25. It's a little less than a mile of 7%, down & back up.

I-40 into Tenn follows Pigeon River Gorge thru the Smokys, so the grades are gentle, but the road is quite curvy for a bit over 20 miles.
