Stone Mountain, Ga to Pigeon Forge/via 441

Can someone tell me how the roads are if we take 441 instead of taking I-75. The time is about the same, but the mileage is about 62 miles less. Thought it also might be a prettier drive, but will be pulling a 31' fifth wheel and was wondering about those hills and curves. thanks
  • 285 to 85 north to 441 north to Franklin NC and follow 441 across the mountains. Your biggest headache will be 285 and 85 in the metro-Atlanta area. Just take your time and allow those behind you to pass by using the pull-offs in the park. Gatlinburg bypass (4 lane) will take you into Pigeon Forge where it opens out to several lanes (of heavy traffic)
  • If you get car sick easily or like to travel at or above the speed limit while towing you won't like this route much. It is certainly scenic though, especially in Autumn.

Traffic on 441 is a serious problem when you get into Sevierville and Pigeon Forge, but outside that area it's not too bad. In those areas people will be driving like idiots (worse than usual, if you can believe that), so try to minimize lane changes as much as possible. Few other drivers (if any) will allow you to change lanes easily, and many will think nothing at all of cutting in front of you and/or stopping suddenly with little to no warning - typical heavy tourist population behavior, but be forewarned that it's an issue all year 'round there...

  • Pretty steep and very serpentine on US441 over the mountains to PF. It depends on your confidence as a driver.
