This weekend we're making a trip from ottawa canada to myrtle beach, we're stopping in Allentown PA, then Virigina Beach, then we head to Myrtle. I've heard that the scenic route is gorgeous, but am wondering how painful it is towing a 30' trailer. The two routes I have so far are below, any suggestions on a better route and if the scenic route is worth the trip?

Scenic Route:

1) i81 to allentown
2) 476 to the 95
3) take 113/13 (scenic route) through delware and down to virigina beach
4) 58 to 95 then down to myrtle

Alternate Route

1) i81 to allentown
2) i81 to 64
3) 64 into virginia beach
4) 58 to 95 then down to myrtle

Unless you have enough time to stop and enjoy the lower eastern shore area. I would stick with 81 to 64.

Now if you have time to wander a bit and hang out a day or 2 in the 113/13 corridor it's a great area to explore.

Personally, to go from Allentown to VA beach, you wouldn't catch me on the 95 through Baltimore and DC. Take your scenic route and cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. I've never been myself, but I plan on it someday.

With the construction in Binghamton and Scranton you might want to time your travel to off peak times. While Binghamton is not bad I strongly suggest you get on the Turnpike at Clark's Summit. You will avoid a ton of grief.

If you have the time the scenic route is great. But you must have the time to donate. To make the most of it the scenic route can add a day to your trip.

I personally would prefer to come down the 13/113 route through Delaware then down the Eastern Shore to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. That route cruises through a bunch of small towns with plenty of places for pit stops. Even more interesting would be to get off I95 and take 322 across the bridge into New Jersey, then take 55, 47, and Garden State Parkway to the Cape May - Lewes Ferry. The Ferry lets you off in Lewes, DE, where you can pick up Rt. 1 to 24 to 113 to 13. Lots of campgrounds to overnight in Cape May County or down the Eastern Shore.
