Thanks... just double checking. Sometimes maps don't indicate friendly big rig roads.
Actually they do. The Rand McNally Motor Carriers Road Atlas outlines all roads that are ok for the Normal Tractor trailer. It has a list of Low bridges by state and other great info. It has the most comprehensive mileage tables of any atlas hands down. and it's laminated and will lay flat.
Any road marked in that atlas as ok for tractor trailers will be "big Rig Friendly"
Check it out. - n7bsnExplorer

I Think CA 190 is fine, tractor trailer delivery trucks use it all the time. And virtually all the traffic into the park enters thru CA 190 or CA 127 from Baker. By some peoples definition the only RV "friendly" road is a smooth 8 lane interstate.
Go to the CA dept of Transportation web site and they usually have some great photos of the roads. Just input the highway number.
Not CA-190 west, in fact the truckers notes for that stretch specifically note that truck/trailer travel on the stretch from Death Valley via Panamint Valley to Lone Pine is not recommended. - KampingKrisExplorerWe went touring in the truck and made it to Stovepipe Wells... And that part of 190 was easy. I suppose climbing out of the valley to Cali is the issue..
We might just end up taking 95 home - Stay on the paved roads and you are fine. Several steep grades approaching 10%, some winding curves and 100+ daytime temperatures. Is that friendly to your RV?
You may want to go around to the North 160, 95, 6
Not sure how 266 and 168 would be but I think it would be worth the short cut and avoid DV. - dicknellenExplorer IIIf you plan to visit DV from Pahrump, take hwy 160 north to Bell Vista west, it is a good road into DV. If you plan to visit Scotty's Castle do that last then continue on 276 east to 95 north to 6 west into Bishop or 6 west to 120 nw to Lee Vining on 395. Dick
- coolbreeze01ExplorerGood road for an experienced mountain driver.
- fireman93514ExplorerAs a twenty year veteran of Caltrans in that area I don't recommend 190. Yes it is doable. It is a white knuckle drive. There have been vehicles go over the edge that were not found for years and I have seen MH's merrily burning along the route from overheating on the grades. I am sure some of the good folks here will disagree with me.
