Toy Hauler trailer, paper work?

We have decided to travel with a toy hauler south of the border next season.
When we purchased it the pink says utility trailer. Therefore I get a special 5 year trailer plate that doesn't renew every year.

I have never traveled with a trailer south of the border, but some I have talked to in Mexico said they came down in their travel trailer no permit, others say they bought the 10 yr permit.
Mine is not a travel trailer but considered a utility trailer. Will this confuse the Aduana?
What do you think
  • About 5 years ago we sold our Bluebird in Tucson. I had not canceled the permit on our way out of Mexico. I had the name of the person in Mexico City and her address. I also had a notarized bill of sale and a copy of the title transfer papers. Went to Estafeta and sent the whole package. Next morning I got a call from the delivery driver in CDM. They would not accept the package. The address was correct but the woman listed on the parcel was now somewhere else. Apparently if it is not addressed correctly they cannot accept??? Only in Mexico I found the name of the new person and Estafeta gave me back the parcel. I readdressed and we left for Canada. Got a registered package with everything I had sent. They needed either a signature on a document from the Secretary of State ( we don't have those in Canada or something from the Arkansas DMV where the buyer resided. Fortunately his wife was a Notary and new how to handle everything. I resent the package and 2 months later the permit was cancelled. I think I paid about $150.00 for all the shipping. I am not sure if they still link your passport to the permit. Moral of the story is to look upon your 10 year permit as annual. When you leave Mexico have the permit canceled. Chuck is fortunate that he lives in California and could easily return to the border with his unit and have the permit canceled. Not so easy when you live 2200 miles away !

  • In 2007 on our way to Zihua, our travel trailer was broadsided and totaled in Kansas.
Took a while to get things sorted out there and in the commotion, we did not think about our 10 year permit until the trailer was already in the salvage yard.

We called the yard and they took a picture of the window with the permit on it. When we got home in the spring, we sent that picture, pictures of the damaged trailer, a detailed letter in Spanish describing the incident, the insurance claim and copies of our 10 year permit paperwork to Aduana in Mexico City..via U.S. Mail.

In about 2 months, we received the cancellation papers in the mail. Carried them with us with our new travel trailer next year and all was good. New permit issued. Now on our third one. It was easy at that time.
  • Navagator sent me a website years ago that confirms that your 10 year permits are tied to your passport number. Renew your passport (at least in the US) and you get a new number. Problem solved.

We also tried to cancel our 10 year permit on our first motorhome from the US and finally gave up.
  • Hi Chuck---I would stay away from the 10 year permit---I sold a 5th wheel without turning in the permit and spent months and dollars trying to get it cancelled---I finally gave up---and thought it would impact the next 5th wheel I took into Mexico but before that time I renewed my passport and with a different passport number they never caught it.
Will it confuse the Aduana---likely but you'll figure it out
Again--what happened to your motorhome or you have two rv's---LOL

  • Confuse aduana?? Of course they will be confused. They are programed for everything to be a certain way. Sometimes not flexible. But if they say anything show them the trailer. It has all the required amenities: beds, water, etc. I haven't brought down a trailer in years but I am sure you need a 10 year permit. Maybe get it online. What happened to your DP??
