Travel to Kiptopeke State Park

We will be traveling to Kiptopeke State Park for the 4th of July weekend.
Still relative new to driving our 36' class A (height should be factory value).

Driving from Farmville, Va to Kiptopeke. Since three basic routes:
1) RV routing system has the route going all the way to DC and back down 13 (not going to do this)
2) Driving 460 to 360 then by airport to I-64. following 460 to HRBT and then finally taking 13 to Chesapeake bay bridge. Through google maps, i saw the inspection stop. I dont see a problem turn off propane.
3) Staying on 460 through petersburg, taking 58 at suffok and finally to 264, connecting to 64 and then to 13.

The third option is the shortest, but has the most surface roads, which i don't mind.
However, i would like to know other drivers' opinion.

Also, I would like to hear recommendations of sites at Kiptopeke. Currently, we are not planning on having a car at the park; therefore, we will be stuck to just bicycling. Some questions:
i would like to go fishing one day:
i know there is a charge for the fishing pier. do they rent complete fishing setups? bait?
do we need a wagon to carry stuff to the beach, or is it reasonable walk?

any advice would be appreciated.
  • Bicycling doesn't stick anyone....unless you are riding cheapo heavy steel cruisers in flip flops without a helmet. Then it could kill you.
  • We were camping at Kiptopeke during Hurricane Matthew! We camped in a class B and had our Durango with us as well. The only thing you can buy in the park is basic stuff like ice, firewood, and bug spray. I did not fish so I do not know about that but the park staff is very helpful - perhaps a call will handle that. The beach is a reasonable walk from the campground.

I do not believe there is anything like beer and food within 7 or 8 miles. We were glad we had a car with us, but we are not bikers.

We were coming from the Charlottesville area, so we did 64 to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel going there and had to go the northern route home because high winds closed the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.
  • On your routing, I would take;
    460 east to
    I-85 North to
I-95 south to a LEFT exit onto
    I-295 North to
    I-64 East to
Rt 13 North to the CBBT
This eliminates all of the Richmond traffic.
    Happy motoring

This is by far the best way. Be aware that there will be massive traffic jams at the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel unless you are going early in the week.
We have been there literally hundreds on times before we retired and moved back to NC. The best sites are on the left side of the first left turn you can take in the CG area. The farther down the better. Shaded and no traffic thru your site to the bath house. The middle area at both ends has more shallow sites. The area even with the bath house and beyond are nice also but those in the culdesac are tight entering but pie shaped beyond that. Those are well shaded.
There is a gas station just north of the park that can provide the beer and snacks. 3 miles south of the park at the north end of the CBBT is another campground that has a nice little tiki bar/restaurant right on the beach. The new owners of that CG have restricted access, something about a fee that is then taken off your check if you really go to the restaurant. Sunset Beach RV Resort is the name. Both are easily bikeable, and there is a bike trail behind the trees on the NB side that will get you safely to the other GC. Take the first right out of the CG and then go straight over to RT 13 to cross. You will have to cross 13 twice. The trail does not extend north to the official turn off to the park.
