US-31 Indiana

Going to visit Son near Indy and thinking of taking US-31 from the KY border to just south of Indy for a change of pace from I-65. Is it a good idea or not? I'm not in a hurry. Thanks
  • Always used to be interesting the first 42 years of my life. I remember when IT was the highway south before 65... I was a kid going with my parents to Florida, but Yes, me and dirt are roughly the same age...
  • As I recall it's not too bad, lots of farm land and small towns that bottleneck the highway.
  • Take it north, but slow. Enjoy the speed on the way home on i65
  • There's a big stretch of US-31 between Seymour and Columbus that's closed until sometime in November. They're replacing a few bridges.

  • We've traveled US 31 from Indy all the way to Louisville many, many times over the years. I prefer it over I-65, towing the trailer or not. We absolutely despise I-65! But, don't know about road construction at the current time though. Still, if sections under construction, should be easy enough to jump on I-65 and then get off at the next exit and get back on 31. It is a slower drive than I-65 but in my opinion, so much nicer.
  • Thanks. I will take it going over to 65 were the bridge work is.

Just to make you aware there are several construction zones on 31 south of Seymour. Narrowed lanes, pavement resurfacing etc. If you do not want to use 65 you can go east on US-50 to IN 750 to SR 7 at North Vernon(approx. 12 miles) and back north to 31(approx. 12-15 miles). I would prefer this to 65. Only one stop light, a small town(Scipio)40 speed limit and a small construction zone.
