Any issues with finding diesel fuel on US 50 through Nevada (Delta to Reno)? It looks like the biggest stretch is out of Delta west for 155 miles before Ely?DW is a little intimidated with the name "Loneliest Highway", as I've left her stranded before out of fuel :) She wants me to take I-80.

Go ahead and take 50. The "lonely" label was given years ago.There are towns along the way and diesel is available. Between the towns is very lonely, still. Hwy 50 is a much nicer drive than I-80. A bit slower though.I have driven in many times (I live in Reno).Cheers,

Great highway. Lots of ups and downs! I would suggest keeping an eye on where you are at and your fuel gauge. Don't drop too much below half depending on your mileage. The hills can eat some fuel!

The Loneliest Highway was an advertising ploy to get more people to visit central Nevada. Drive on the top half of your tank, fill up before 7 or 8 pm if you plan to drive into the night. Most of US 50 is not fenced so if you drive into the night be aware of black cows, standing on the black highway, on a dark night kind of thing. Rural Nevada people are friendly.

I would take US 50 any day over I80. Road surface is much better traffic is light and almost no truck traffic.

Fuel stops is no problem.

When towing I never go past 65 so it is not any slower than I80 as you are at or below the posted speed limit.

If you've never driven this road, or if you have and want to relive it, check out this video where the 288 mile trip from Fernley to Ely is condensed into 9 1/2 minutes (I think that's around 1800 MPH?)

The reputation is undeserved. The term was first used in a magazine article used ago and was not true then. There are many more stretches of highway in the U.S. more lonely.

GREAT drive. Have done Hwy 50 a few times and enjoyed each time. Go for it!
