- Sam_SpadeExplorerIIRC, some sections in Illinois are in pretty bad shape.....as are a LOT of things in Illinois......but it runs parallel to I-57 and should be easy to jump over. That's assuming that I-57 is any better.
- edm3rdExplorerI (barely) remember the days before interstate highways. US-45 was a major route of Chicago to the Gulf coast. Today, much of it is 4-lane and some portions divided 4-lane, plus bypasses have been created around some cities (ie Tupelo, MS and Jackson, Tn) and larger towns. Both in Mississippi and Tennessee US-45 is in great shape and doesn't see a great volume of traffic - I cannot comment on further north.
- Alabama_JimExplorerIt has been a few years since I traveled hwy. 45, but it was in fine shape through Alabama and Mississippi. I pray you have a safe and enjoyable trip.
- darsbenExplorer IIDId US 45 from Tupelo, Ms to I64 in Illinois last fall.
Most of road was great with localized areas of fair/poor.
All in all an okay.
I am in a class A - STBRetiredExplorerThanks for the replies. We are giving it a try. Will post if we run into any really nasty sections.

Unless you want a "thrill", the US 45 bridge over the Ohio river near Paducah, Ky should be avoided. Two narrow lanes; open grate style.
I don't mind long bridges but this one gave me the willies.
