Virginia I-81 South Bound Closed MM 138 to MM 118

Be aware that interstate 81 in Virginia southbound is closed for 1 - 10 days according to VDOT...... Call 511 for info. This is about MM138 to MM118. The blasting for construction of a new truck climbing lane has opened a serious crack in the slope ......... fearing a landslide..... It is unknown at this time for sure how long the road will be closed but 1 -10 days is the estimate. Traffic is being detoured at the Dixie Caverns exit to Christiansburg exit 118 onto RT 11/460....... Good Luck !!!!

I just saw that. I have to head down your way in a couple weeks and I am glad it is open

They have already re-opened it. The slope problem wasn't as bad as they first thought it was.

Accidents being reported all along I-81 in the Staunton to Wytheville corridor. I would advise a different route if possible. The detour will likely be in place well past Labor Day.

Starts at Exit 132. (Dixie Caverns Exit)

Any of you traveling this area should be prepared for long delays southbound. The detour is mostly 4 lane but there are a couple of traffic lights near schools. A short stretch is 60 mph but for the most part it is 55. The climb up the mountain has a truck lane but traffic will still get backed up at the top when the highway goes to two lane with a center turn lane.

The whole project has been a fiasco from the start. This is just the latest.
