When you cross the border now with pets.

I apologize for introducing the phrase 'big time'. Culturally, a phrase with many meanings. I should know better.

Each border crossing is one transaction. If each country is going to keep problems out of their own country, they have to question the incoming traffic one vehicle by one vehicle. 80,000 damaged items means big by comparison.

Just as on Sept 11, a few planes, under 10, made a big difference by what they did.

I can readily understand either border wanting to restrict entry of items containing the category of those which were diseased, ie. any pet food containing poultry.

Now, the reality check that 'made in the USA' is considered acceptable for entry into that country. There is a minor detail not covered by that regulation. In the time of the phoney ingredient from China, which was actually a very dangerous plastic, some of it got into USA made pet food. I never picked up any cases of pet food made in Canada contained said plastic. Like, I said, 'minor detail'. Reality is if your going into the USA, those cases don't mean a thing.

Still, I've always been glad I had my dogs on a made in Canada dog food at that time.

Abbotsford and Chilliwack combined are about 220,000 population. And yes 80,000 is a small outbreak. Ten years ago a virus got away and about 18 million had to be destroyed. Since then, they are all over these things before it can happen again. Farming is pretty big around here.

In your rush to sling mud I believe you missed the word "area" in my location.

I live a few miles outside of the nearest town, one with 270 residents. Toronto is 50 miles away.

And yes, relatively speaking, 80,000 birds is a 'small' outbreak.

Currently there are no restrictions on poultry products, probably because these outbreaks happen on both sides of the border and usually originate with wild birds.

Taking non US manufactured pet food into the US has been an issue for years

The news out of B.C. is if the poultry is cooked or processed, then it is safe to eat, so there was no recall of the meat.

I expect folks will be asked about any chicken in the freezer as they pass back into the states. Not so much if they're coming into Canada.

The mad cow disease prompted the same reaction.

Be sure to leave your dog food in its original packaging to prove where it was made. "Made in USA" is usually a good thing, we've never had our "Made in USA" dog food confiscated by border agents going either way.

Let's try to keep this thread on topic relative to whatever effect the finding of Avian flu in western Canada may have on RVers crossing food products across borders.

Many of us have an appreciation that border protection agencies on both sides can quickly react with changes to regulations when such things occur regardless of where they happen. I think the OP was just providing heads-up information.

While posting this topic will alert pet owners about the possibility of losing their pet food crossing the border, there is no guarantee that your pet food won't be taken no matter what it is or where you got it.

In the past when beef was a concern we lost our dog food because "it could have been made on the same processing line as..." Bottom line is that the border person has the ability to make these arbitrary decisions and there isn't anything you can do about it. Best thing that can happen is that they allow you to take a meal or two worth of the food to allow you time to buy replacement food once you cross the border
