We are planning our winter route to southern Texas from Saskatchewan in a motorhome towing. We would like to know which route you recommend and where the best places to stay are.

Google Maps Trip from Saskatchewan to BrownsvilleI've found traveling on a lot of our two lane roads is often better than our Interstate Highways. There's less traffic in most cases and lot fewer tractor trailers. You'll need to slow down while going through towns and occasionally come up on a traffic light. The route Google chose here includes some Interstate, some Federal Highways and some State highways. Only 2,235 miles and 35 hours driving time at the posted speeds so an RV may take a little longer. Enjoy the trip and I'll join you in Brownsville about the 1st of next year.

Thank you. We will check out Google maps. I have been looking at places to stop for the night. There seems to be many Casinos so are thinking that might be our best option. We r booked in at Weslaco and very much looking forward to our winter months.

While enroute to our distant destinations, we use Passport America parks and stay there at 1/2 their regular price. I-35 traffic generally from N of Denton, Tx down past San Antonio is challenging. A lot of construction from Waco south. If you choose this route and can time passing thru during off peak hours, then it might not be so bad. If you're not on a time crunch, you could take I-25 all the way to El Paso, then hit I-10. But, you have to stop for a few days at the Davis Mountains. Alpine, Marfa and Ft Davis are the hidden gems of West Texas.

You want to take I-35W thru Denton, not I-35E thru Dallas. That is the easier route. They have been completely rebuilding I-35 a section at a time thru Texas over the last number of years. Much of what was once rough 4 lane (2 each way) is now 6 and 8 lane all new highway. The current section beginning rebuild is thru the Waco area. Enjoy it before and after Waco, and suffer thru the Waco section. But they generally do a very good job of keeping traffic flowing. Been driving it several times a year for the last 51 years. Austin and San Antonio can often be heavy traffic slowdown. You can bypass that by taking the toll road from just north of Georgetown down to I-10 east of San Antonio. Time your travel to avoid large cities during rush hours. Many people who do not like interstates take US 281 from Wichita Falls to San Antonio to bypass much of I-35, some 2 lane, some 4 lane, thru a lot of small towns. The VERY large Winstar Casino on I-35 in Oklahoma just before the Texas border will be the last casino you see as Texas has none. But we do have great rest areas.

We go down the east side of TX , cut over to Waco and down 77 to Victoria. From there either over to the coast, or continue south on 77. We miss the traffic in all the large cities.

I have lived in East Texas all my life. The above quote is good advice in my opinion. We go often to the Texas Valley in Winter for a few days and we often follow the route above. I can give several possible routes through East Texas, but right now we are in New Mexico so I won't go into that detail

I've corrected my post to show (2,235) miles instead of (3,597) kilometers. I wasn't looking close enough at that when copied that information. Still, it would take me a bit more than 35 hours - more like about 45 at least!

If you are going by the link above, that distance was in kilometers. Comes out to around 65 miles per hour. And that is driving time and does not factor in stop times.

Definitely avoid I35 between Dallas/Ft Worth and San Antonio. Traffic delays can be unbelievable. US281 is a good route anywhere you can access it. The western route will be much more interesting.

South of San Antonio leave the Interstate (I-37) and get on US-281 near Three Rivers. It is a very good road and is shorter going to Weslaco. My winter home is on the Donna-Weslaco border and I use that route all the time.

The western route through San Antonio is really nice. Also, the Buckhorn lake RV resort is really nice in Kerrville. Stay there a few days and visit Kerrville and Fredericksburg.
