12 volt tv outlets

While dry camping are my 110 volt outlets converted to 12 volts?

I am considering buying a 12 volt tv and expect to plug it in (while dry camping) as I do when on shore power. After reading some discussions of 12 volt TV's I seems that they are plugged into a cigar lighter outlet. I do not have that king of outlet.

Your 110 outlets are not converted to 12 volt. The only 12 volt outlets would look like a cig lighter, and 12 volt TV's have that type of plug.
  • Most RV's have a 12v Power Port (cigar lighter plug) on the same panel that you plug in the antenna. Are you sure you don't have one?
  • Thanks for quick response guys, and particularly SCH911.
Stuck my finger back there and yes I have a 12 volt power outlet.
  • For safety reasons a outlet is never used for more than ac or dc. That is why A 50 amp plug is not the same as 30 amp etc. etc. rct. If you look a 15 amp is not the same as a 20 amp. That is the general rule. Not getting to technical.
  • You can also wire in a small inverter to power the 120v outlets from the battery.
  • The tv in my TT had a brick power supply rated at 12v output. I made another power cord with a barrel connector and 12v plug to use when we're off the grid. Our granddaughter was able to watch a few DVD's to keep herself amused the last time out.
  • This is off topic, but the OP's issue got me thinking.

The OP's signature photo shows a TT RV. Why would a TT manufacturer not provide any 12 volt outlets in their product??

Just keep in mind the OTA TV PANEL 12VDC outlet does not support very many AMPS. If you overload this outlet it will blow an internal fuse in the panel and you will lose you OTA Antenna operation capability.

It is better to wire your 150WATT to 300WATT PSW small 12VDC Inverter directly to your battery terminals using the proper size protection fuse. Then plug your 120VAC Home entertainment units into the Inverter 120VAC OUTLETS to use.

We use a 600WATT PSW Inverter to run these type of items when we are camping off the power grid. You will like us most likely want to run a few other items when camping off the power grid... I started out with a 150WATT Inverter then went to a 400WATT and finally ended up with a 600WATT unit. We normally use around 300WATTS for our toys each day/night camping run off the batteries. We also use a PURE SINE WAVE type Inverter to run our Home entertainment electronics items.

Of course the more you need the bigger the battery bank... Our battery bank is a 255AH setup.
