2020 North Carolina Camping Destinations

We stayed at Frisco National Park Campground in Cape Hatteras National Park. No hookups but generators allowed and some real nice big sites. Store with gas right outside entrance. Nice beach and close to Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum and Ferry to Oracoke Island. Further north on the island is Oregon Inlet NP campground. They do have electric sites but no shade.Also close to the beach.

Tanglewood Park at Clemmons is OK if you're in the Winston-Salem area. Some sites slope a bit. It's in a big county park. Tour historic Old Salem.

If your a dog lover, 4Paws Kingdom. Fantastic times there!
Did a couple of long term stays at Topsail Sound RV resort. Very nice place.

CHARLOTTE AREA
if you are interested in exploring the charlotte area, the camping world campground at the charlotte racetrack is great. its basically a large gravel parking lot with full hookups but the sites are large and prices are cheap approx 25 bucks a night on non race weekends. good basecamp for exploring.


koa outerbanks cape hatteras, ocean front. pricey but worth it.

willowtree rv resort. inland but short drive to myrtle beach.. huge sites, books up early.

brunswick beaches campground. sunset beach nc.. former koa. close drive to beach. calabash etc.

A few we have enjoyed.
Stone Mountain State Park, large sites and beautiful area.
Camp Hatteras RV Resort, Crosses the island for beach or sound access.
Deep Creek Camping, tube down the mountain and float right up to your site.

Grapefull Sisters Vineyard and Carrollwoods RV park in Tabor City NC. Easy drive to Myrtle beach and Wilmington and close to Calabash and great fresh seafood. One of our favorites.

We like Stonebridge RV in Maggie Valley...short distance to Cherokee...and not far from Transylvania County where so many beautiful waterfalls are located.
We also stayed at Homeplace RV in Ararat, NC, and visited Mount Airy ("Mayberry") not far away.

Our favorite NC campground is the Lake Powhatan Recreation Area campground in the Pisgah National Forest near Asheville. The mis-named "Lakeside Loop" has full hookups and the large sites are paved. With our Senior Access Pass, our cost is about $21 per night.

We did stop last year at Mama Greties. Everyone should. We lucked out and got a premo site at the top of the hill. Really really nice, but it is a RV park and nothing camping in the woods. Neighbors were nice but too close for our taste. Still it's something you gotta do once, just to say you did. We would probably stop there again, but not as a destination site. FWIW

If you haven’t been to Campfire Lodgings just above Asheville, nice place, great people, and their premium sites have great view.
