Acadia Campground Help

Need some help with a campground selection for those that have been there. I'm in the beginning phases of planning a trip for next June to Acadia National Park. I have never been, so most of my campground selections are going off of internet searches and reviews. So far I really like Schoodic Woods Campground. Very spacious and private from what I can tell. Only problem so far, it looks like it is easily over an hours drive to Bar Harbor where we would like to eat out the 4 days we are there. Are there any other campgrounds in the area that are like Schoodic Woods? I do not mind not having full hook-ups but if I'm going to be camping on top of someone, I would prefer full hook-ups. Also, what are your favorite places to eat at while in the area? Thanks for the help.

I would split my time between Blackwoods and Seawall CG's which are in the NP . Seawall is easier to get into in the summer without reservations and is near the ocean. The water is clean and cold. There is a warm fresh water lake with a beach nearby which is nice also. Several places nearby to buy lobster which we cooked at the campsite along with mussels we collected along the rocky shoreline. The GK's enjoyed the trip.

Timberland Acres is where we stayed last year. 16 miles to BH, 15 miles to the park. Couple miles from town (food, Wal-Mart, rest, etc). Full hook -ups.paved roads, lots of seasonals, but l, many open sites. We drove thru both KOA's and not for us. IMO, too small, very close together. Think it's the Narrows that's right by the airport, seemed nice, but the dust from the roads thru the park was atrocious. Downtown BH is very tight and parking is at a premium.

Thank you all for the replies. You all have made my decision even harder...LOL. Seriously though, I love this website just for this thread. It's nice to know you an drive halfway across the country and not reserve a "dump" because of help from folks on the site.

I'm not sure there's truly a "bad" campground there. It will all be dependent upon what you are willing to spend, location and whether or not you want to risk not having a site if you choose a first come/first served campground.

I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be

We stayed at Bar Harbor campground and loved it. We were there in early June and the place was practically empty. We like that you can drive around and take whatever site you like and stay as long as you like. The price was great. We were concerned about not having a reservation, but were told they don't usually fill up except in July, but of course, can't guarantee that.Overlook sites were great!

KOA Oceanside. We had a waterfront site its a great park. They have a person who cooks lobster dinners inside the park and there is a island shuttle for free. Just show up at the office and hop on it circles the island get off where you want. We had a wonderful stay there.

I've camped around Bar Harbor and north for years. I always camped at Blackwoods. If you don't need any hookups, it's a great spot. There is a path over to the ocean, where you can sit and enjoy the rocky coast. I camped at Schoodic Woods last year. It is very nicely laid out, lots of elbow room. Hard for me as my camper is not self contained, and they don't have showers. If you stay near Bar Harbor, don't just drive the park, get out and do some of the hiking trails along the carriage paths. Well worth it. Many good restaurants, don't miss some of the lobster pounds over in Southwest Harbor. Also, Head of the Harbor, if it's still there.
I also head further north. Sunset Point Campground in Harrington is a nice spot, with hookups. My favorite campground is up at Cobscook Bay State Park. No hookups, but beautiful campsites, the one I take is completely private, on the water. Bliss. Very quiet up past Ellsworth. I like it up there so much, I'm finally buying a place.

We stayed at Timberland Acres for week, last month and it was perfect for us. 15 to 20 minutes to Bar Harbor and yet off the island and convent for trips up and down Rt 1. Although construction north of Cialis.
Have Fiver will travel with little or no notice at all. I do need to stop at rest areas now and then:)

Mount Desert Narrows, just onto the island, haven't stayed there yet, but will in Sept. will post a review on RVparkreviews, afterwards.
Schoodic Woods is Fairly new, we have reservations there for a few days too, the quiet & seclusion is part of the reason we made reservations there.

Have stayed @ Narrows Too several times as well. Excellent lobster right across the street.

We stay at Narrows Too- sites are not too packed in. FHU. Bar Harbor CG is also pretty nice are an earlier post indicates. I looked at Bass Harbor a couple days ago as a possibility for next year. We are 43' long and there were only 6-7 sites that we would fit in and unfortunately they were under pine trees, so I nixed that. I don't know about other sites in the park. We'll be back at Narrows Too next summer.

Bar Harbor is a zoo that we drove through and immediately departed and this was in October. . Lots of great places to eat that are not in Bar Harbor.
