+1 on black flies in June - been there, done that.
The Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake shows the history of the area and how it has changed over time.
Old Forge Hardware is an experience. If they don't have it it probably was never made.
There's the Olympic Venue in Lake Placid, IIRR you can take a bobsled ride year-round. Near there is the drive up Whiteface Mountain in Wilmington.
Tupper Lake has the Natural History Museum. I'd say it's more geared for kids with the hands-on displays, but we've been members since it opened.
Can't comment on Lake George, we were there once and found it too commercial & tourist-y.
We prefer to dry camp in DEC (State) cg's but our favorite private cg is North Pole Resorts in Wilmington near Lake Placid.
