Anyone use I-65 lately?

Hi. We're getting ready to head back to Ann Arbor, MI from Port Charlotte, FL. We usually do the I-75 thing but for a change we're thinking of catching I-65 at Montgomery or Nashville to Louisville. How does I-65 compare to I-75? We'll be towing a trailer. Thanks.
  • I usually transit big cities in the middle of the day and take the route through downtown rather than wasting time with bypasses. Paid a price last week in Toledo where there was an accident that cost us a 45 minute delay. The construction is a mess but no biggie (42'6" 5th wheel)
  • Thanks for the suggestion!

We've tried some alternates including one year where the Garmin took us through downtown Toledo with our 5th wheel (no fun!), it took the short route but not the one that was easiest.

We also sometimes stay at Auburn on the way through north of Fort Wayne, so the toll road is a bit longer but less of a hassle.

Can't talk about I-75 anywhere south of Toledo as we haven't taken it in years, but we take I-65 on our way back north from southern California back to Canada, we transit Memphis, Nashville and go through Louisville then up through Indiana on I-65 and then take the toll road to Toledo and up to Detroit on I-75 before we cross back into Canada.

There is construction on some sections (but where isn't there construction these days?) but we had no problems towing a 39 ft. 5th wheel (except taking the wrong exit onto 465 in Louisville, something we've done more than once, not marked very well!)

On edit, I just read the other post linked above, yes there are some bumpy sections, but nothing like I-75 from the Ohio border to Detroit, we found the roads in Mexico better than that section of interstate!

    You shouldn't have a problem.

US 24 is 4 lane interstate-like from Ft Wayne to Toledo and would shave some time & $ off of your trip.
  • Thanks everyone. I didn't see the I-65 thread when I did a search. Looks like there might be bridge construction in Louisville,KY. Otherwise, it seems okay.
  • I 65 from Montgomery to Louisville, KY is fine. To me, the worst part is going through Birmingham. There seems to always be roadwork or a traffic accident backing traffic up. The best time to go through Birmingham is midnight or later.
