Boone, Iowa

We are planning a long weekend in the Boone, Ia area. Plan is to do the Boon Valley Train one day. Not sure what we will do the second day. Are there any recommendations for campgrounds in that area? Looking at Ledges State Park but without water/sewer hookups, the bath houses are important to us, and these seem to get pretty bad reviews on RV Campgrounds Reviews website. Does anyone have any updated information, or other recommendations for us? Mom, Dad, 2 yr old and 4 yr old.

Thanks!
  • 45 minutes away is the Des Moines State Fairgrounds.

You can't get in DURING the fair times but when the fair is NOT on they have a great CG there. Over a thousand sites!
I make that a must stay when traveling thru Iowa.

It sits real high on a hill and you can see the gold covered capital building and when the fair is not on its a real nice peaceful CG AND inexpensive. I'm sure there are a quite a lot of things to see in and around Des Moines too.

Great big bath house also! :W
  • I love Ledges, as the hiking and scenery is fantastic for Iowa. However, if you want more amenities and FHUs you might go 40 or so miles south to either Timberline CG in Waukee, or the West Des Moines KOA near Adel. Both are very nice.
  • I think Ledges would be great for us but just concerned about the bath houses. Do you have any recent experience on their condition?
  • Having a fully contained RV, we rarely use bath houses unless we are winterized, so I cant comment on the BHs at Ledges. The two CGs I mentioned in the earlier post south of Boone have immaculately clean BHs if that is what is really important.
  • You may wish to consider Jester Park in Granger, 24 miles south. It is a very nice park with excellent facilities.
  • Main purpose of the trip is to take the kids on the Boone Scenic Valley Railroad. Saturday trips include steam engine.
  • For the proximity to Boone, I wouldn't let the bathrooms/showers scare you away. There are two bathhouses, one in the electric loop, and the other in the tent loop. They are your typical state park bathrooms, in need of renovation, but not intolerable.

There is a lot of hiking/exploring to do in Ledges, that can take most of a day. Ledges has a limited number of electric sites - finding weekend sites can be a challenge. I would look at reservations.
