Campgrounds around Reno, NV and SLC UT?

In the Reno area on I-80 just before the California border is a FHU campground next to Cabelas at Boomtown exit on your right heading west. Another FHU campground is at the Grand Sierra Resort on 395 South at the Mill Street Off ramp, both good spots and easy to find locations. I-80 and I-395 intersect so you won't have to drive through city streets to find either campgrund.

If you want to go further across Nevada, you could check out Rye Patch Reservoir State Park. It is off the highway, about 40 miles from Winnemucca. The sites below the dam are shaded. Last time we stayed there, the showers were not so good, though. They also have a dump station.

Park City RV Resort (not really a resort) is just east of SLC and right on the interstate. Very easy in and out.
Mountain Shadows is OK too, but it is a long way off 80.

If you're just doing one night and moving on, then I'd concur with Pony Express RV park in SLC. It's clean and convenient. If you're insistent on a state park, Willard Bay SP is about 45 minutes north off I-15. You'll want reservations there as it fills up.

For the Reno area, consider going 15 minutes further to Verdi and stay at the Gold Ranch Casino & RV Park. It's in the mountains, spaces are wide with grass, and it's less expensive than Sparks Marina. There are some hiking trails nearby.

And if you're willing to go 30 minutes further to Truckee, there are a couple of nice Forest Service campgrounds on the Truckee river, just down CA 89 from Truckee. We've stayed at Granite Flats campground several times. Some road noise during the day but it's nice to be right on the river. No hookups.

Mountain Shadows is one we stayed at last year on a trip we took. Very nice place, nice folks, reasonable price and FHUs. If you are taking a 3,000 mile trip, it's not that far off the interstate, but we did have to look for it, but found it quite easily.

Mountain Shadow is quite a ways off of I80, as is Carson City!

In SLC and right off the I80 is the Pony Express rv park, and in Reno (as mentioned above) Sparks Marina rv park.

Both Sparks Marina and Gold Dust West in Reno & Carson City are pricey parks. There is nothing cheap in the area, there's a state park just south of Reno on the 540, Washoe Lake State Park, it's about $18, no hookups but has bathrooms & showers. There are casinos that let you boondock, Rail City in Sparks and possibly Grand Sierra in Reno (they also have an rv park). Reno has a city ordinance that doesn't allow overnights in the parking lots and I've heard they are enforcing it now. The Nugget in Sparks also used to let rv's boondock in their lot, call them.
