Campgrounds near Portland, Maine

Our granddaughter is a freshman at the U of Southern Maine in Gorham, Maine and plays on the tennis team. We'd like to get up to see her play at some home games in Sept or Oct, and see the college. I've researched all the usual campground comment/review sites, and now I'm asking for the recommendations of Open Roads campers. As we've traveled, I've realized that lots of small campgrounds are NOT listed in publications or on RVParkReviews. We have a mini poodle and take her with us. We regularly leave her in the camper and home alone for 4-7 hours, TV and a/c on.
So we are looking for a place near the university, with electric, pet friendly and we don't care about pools, bingo, etc..
Thanks!
  • Although about 20 miles away, I would suggest Chewonki in Wiscasset. It is the nicest place to stay in the area!
  • Check out Scarborough to the south and Freeport to the north of Portland. There are a number of nice campgrounds at either, in Scarborough, there is an adult only campground, never been but heard it is nice, called Wild Duck I believe.
  • Poland Spring Campground is about 30 miles away. It's been a few years, but last time it was very clean, well run, and they were making improvements. Staff is great. They do have a "no pets unattended" rule but I don't know if they enforce it.
  • Suggest you check out Wassamki Springs in Scarborough. Nice campground, especially if you're just looking for a comfortable place to visit your grandaughter. But suggest you look carefully at season end dates wherever you may end up. Most of the campgrounds around here close up by Oct 15 at the latest. Someone suggested Chewonki in Wiscasset, but that's a lot more than 20 miles away. Check the maps wherever you decide. Enjoy your visit, and come back soon.
  • Hemlock Grove in Arundel , right next to kennebunkport , is a real nice smaller family owned campground. We have been there many times and use it for our southern Maine base camp. Clean and well run.
  • We just came from the Freeport KOA which ggeeza mentioned. There's no shade in Section A but there are shaded sites elsewhere in the campground. Overall the campground is nice. Friendly staff. I strongly recommend that you avoid the Desert of Maine Campground as the WIFI does not work in the shaded and FHU sites and there is no TV.

I strongly suggest that you avoid Bayley's Campground in Scarborough which advertises 700 sites. Many sites are not level, sewer connections are uphill, and the campground is not well marked so you can easily get lost. It is difficult to maneuver around in the inner sections as the roads are tight.

The good part is that there is a restaurant nearby called the Clam Bake which is huge and busy so get there early.
  • Wild Duck in Scarborough is a very good cg, adults only - have stayed there a couple of times, and enjoyed it. Some sites are bigger than others, it is not cookie cutter, great owners.
