Campsites on the way: St paul MN to Yellowstone

Hello,

I will be traveling from St Paul, MN, to Yellowstone. I want to take 94 west, and go through North Dakota, then come down, as to avoid the bighorn mountains.

Any suggestions on where to camp on the way ?

I am allowing myself two days and two nights to get there, as we have a 17 month old toddler and aren't sure how many stops we will have to make.

Thanks for any input .
  • I have made the the trip to Yellowstone many times from near Detroit Lakes MN to Yellowstone via I94. From St Paul I would recommend Ft Abraham Lincoln state park near Mandan ND, 701-667-6340, or the Medora Campground & RV Park, 701.623-4435. I would recommend reservations for both if you are traveling on the weekend.

Makoshika state park at Glendive MT is another possibility. Again you should have reservations on the weekend.

My preferred route with a motor home to Yellowstone is I94/I90 to Laurel MT then South to Cody WY via Belfry MT. Near Cody you can take Dead Indian Pass to the NE entrance via Cooke City MT or use the East entrance via Cody WY.

    Enjoy your trip

  • Hi, Happy--
The midpoint of your trip is near ND oil country, so reservations are a good idea. I've enjoyed Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park in Mandan, ND, on he bluffs above the Missouri R. It's about 10 miles off the interstate, so the Bismarck KOA may be more convenient. Makoshika State Park in Glendive, MT, is also pretty, though it's a haul from St. Paul. Medora, ND, is close to a midpoint for you. My preference there is Teddy Roosevelt National Park CG nearest to town or the municipal park CG. Buffalo roam freely in the NP, including in the CG, heads up.

Bismark is about 6.5 hours and there is a KOA there.

Cody WY is 7.5 hours from there if you're going that way. If you don't have reservations for Yellowstone, you can try Yellowstone Valley Inn between Cody and Yellowstone. Convenient for drives into Yellowstone. There are also RV parks in Cody about an hour from Yellowstone.

Thank you, but I made reservations at "3 mile campground" 3 miles from the entrance. But yellowstone valley inn looks very nice,

Not knowing how many miles you plan on traveling each day...go to www.rvparkreviews.com find a town 300-400-500 miles down the road and see what campgrounds are in that area.

Perhaps the number of miles he will travel depends upon what CG suggestions he gets from here...?

I have not traveled that route. I was thinking of suggesting Bowman-Haley Lake CG in the SW corner of ND, but I see that it's 100 miles south of the expressway... too far out of the way.

Yes thank you. So yellowstone is 955 miles from my house, I have two full days to get there. Traveling with a toddler. So I guess I am looking for a campground about 459-600 miles away.

Sure I can go google and find 10 of them myself, but I guess I was more looking more for some highly recommended ones, or maybe some lesser known "gems"

  • There is a RV park in Mendora, ND, right across the road from Theodore Roosevelt National Park which is worth a day if you have time. We took a campsite and drove the park loop before sundown. Drove it again early the next morning before leaving. Buffalo (which you will see in Yellowstone, but here there is no crowd of people with cameras), lots of prairie dogs, and you can see wild horses, sometimes close to the road.

I think it is a Good Sam park -- I can look it up in my diary.
  • Pick up a good campground directory. It's invaluable in looking for a campground when you are not sure what town you will be stopping in. We also carry the KOA directory.
