Well, they have not changed from their rude self of the past. Our group stopped holding rallies there a while ago because of it. Then last night a friend came into town traveling thru and stayed there. I went to pick them up for dinner and was told I could not go back and get them unless I paid. I could have everyone walk in the rain or I could park pay and walk back. He could see my handicapped tag in the window. I said here they are standing right next to him waiting for him to move so they could get in. We decided to have them follow me in their car so they would not have to walk back to their coach in the rain.

They have a very unfriendly attitude and I would never stay there. Lots of places are at least friendly after you pay your money. Oh and they are right on the main road and have loads of noise.

Horrible Campground! Will never stay here again. The management/owners are nasty and watch everything you do. Cameras and microphones everywhere and they radar your speed and if you go over 5mph they stop you and yell at you. They charge $10 per visitor and our guests didn't know to stop at the registration office to pay and get a parking pass and they kicked them out in the middle of dinner! There's no reasoning with the manager/owner... He's extremely ignorant and very nasty!!!

You are responding to a topic that's 9 years old, but it looks like nothing has changed.  RVparkreviews is a good site to read/leave reviews on CGs.

Candy Hill has received awful review for years - same complaints, over and over again. I just don't understand how they continue to stay in business - guess because there are not too many campgrounds off 81 in that area.

FYI Morris Meadows in MD off of I83 has reimaged themselves, and is now Merry Meadows. Merry my behind. Same owners, same jerks just the next generation.
They have so many signs up about rules some of the signs block other signs.
We only went there because we wanted to visit our DD at a nearby college, never again.

I used to camp a Candy Hill until I had a run-in with the jerk who manages it. I called ahead for a spot on a busy weekend. They said sure come on in. Turned out the spot was in a field with an electric riser, not a regular spot, and was still $50. I complained to the jerk and told him it was hard to level and couldn't get a wheelchair out, he said sounds unsafe, you better leave. The jerk at this point goes to pull my electric plug out. Sure, after driving 6 hours and on a holiday weekend and a screaming 3 year old I'm going to pack up at night and start driving again. I passed up a nice campground to get to this place because I was told they had a site. I wouldn't have gone to it if I was told it was overflow in the field and not level. Needless to say I have never been back to the place and will never give them another penny of my money.

When I stayed at Candy Hill I was "chewed out" for not parking my Class A at the exact line drawn on the pavement at check-in. I chalked it up to a "power trip" by the employee and laughed about it later.
I think that they have an "open pool" and allow outsiders to come in for a price which makes it very crowded for those who stay in the park and the "swimmers" didn't look to trustworthy.

We recently stayed at a CG near Montreal, Camping Alouette which has the same rule about paying, the only difference was that if you left with 15 minutes, they refunded the entry fee. Make it a bit of a PITA
and worked if the office was open (8-5) but after hours,no one was allowed in without an access card. They also request a deposit of $20.00 for access card and a $4.00 per day fee for WiFi.per computer.

The downpour had just ended but it was still ugly out. I found out my friend saw there was a problem and drove their car up to the office and followed me in their car. It makes you wonder about campgrounds around here. Wal mart is always full up and I know why.

I'm passing through Winchester this weekend and just this morning was going to try to make a reservation at Candy Hill. It's a good thing I didn't, so instead I made a reservation at a Best Western in Winchester.

It sounds like typical Virginia to me. You have no idea of the relief I feel when I go camping out of state.

We've had very pleasant experiences with folks in SW Virginia.

In our 51 years of RV'ing, Candy Hill in Winchester VA was the worst experience by far we had ever encountered. Beyond rude and simply vulgar language and actions by the manager every time he came around with his golf cart. Smelled strong of alcohol stench and cussed a blue streak. 4 of us who are retired in 2 rigs sitting by the fire after dinner with NO alcohol at all and talking quietly when planning our next day's travel on our way back from Maine after visiting Washington DC for 2 days.

We were in the upper part of the CG all alone with not one other RV within 4 sites on either side and he comes up on his golf cart and starts screaming and cussing that we were to put out the fire out and get in our RV's or packup and get out. Asking why and he said we were talking and it's beyond their quiet time rules. Yes, we'd reported it to RV Review and have told many others who many said thay also had bad experiences there.

The real way to correct the issue is to never stay there and tell everyone and other RV'ers what it's actually like in print and by voice and starve the place until it closes. We've done our part and will continue to do so!

RVers also like to look for reviews at TripAdvisor. You can help speed the starvation process by posting a review over there as Trip Advisor has a huge following. Here's Candy Hill's page link at TripAdvisor and it looks like you're not alone in your assessment.

They had a line of campers on their tiny road, so it was three. Ido not have an issue paying if I am staying but picking people up is just wrong.

Exactly! The best way to eliminate and eradicate a "blood sucker" and eliminating them from having offsprings popping up all around is to deprive them of your "blood". In this case your money! They'll simply vanish and it doesn't take decades to happen either as so many have seen it happen!

I had a good experience when I stayed at Candy Hill. As for charging for visitors a number of campgrounds do that. The good reason is for security but I suspect the real reason is for revenue. Anyway I'm sorry that you had issues there.

I have no issue with charging for visitors. But charging to pull up and pick them up in a heavy downpour is irrational and defies common sense.
Maybe if it were a nice day the group could just meet at the gate.
But in a downpour it should be OK to use common sense.
