Why did people stay in their rigs? No RV is made to stand up to a tornado.
Where would they go?
My wife and I were talking about this tonight. Basically we are sitting ducks in a campground. The only halfway sturdy buildings in a campground are bathhouses and the office. So, you either run to a bathhouse with who knows how many of your closest friends, or ride it out and hope for the best.
And those of us camping with dogs......well, I'd want to take my dogs in the bathroom with me! Really a very sad situation at Cherrystone. - HokiehallExplorer

according to the National Weather Service they said that there was a difference of 8 to 12 minutes of warning for that storm it was created over the Chesapeake Bay informed up really quick and happened faster than anyone could ever report most of the people were still asleep in there campers even if there was some sort of warning if you had no access to media there would be no way to reach them.. - barefoot14ExplorerA fund for the three children of the couple who were killed on Virginia's Eastern Shore has been set up at PNC Bank in Onley VA. - armyhockeynutExplorerThe tornado struck at 8:30 am. Some may very well still have been in bed. Not all that unusual especially if your on vacation.
- John_S_Explorer IIAlso there are reports of 1300 plus people and there is no way they would all fit in the bathhouses.

I think the thing came in so fast that no one could get to a bath house. Apparently the warnings came in about the same time the tornado did. - mdcampingExplorerThis is so hard to believe...this was our best family camping trip ever... just terrible
