City Campgrounds

I've found that stopping at the first visitor center as you enter a new state offers a lot of plusses. Most have ample pull thru sites for RVs. Gives you a chance to stretch your legs, use their bathroom facilities, check at the desk for the latest road construction, and pick up brochures for CGs to stay and things to see. Skip the "Ripley's Believe It Or Not" brochure. The answer is "Not".

Texas publishes a guide to the public campgrounds in that state. Think it is from the highway dept, not sure, I pick it up at he welcome center.

I've not seen a guide as comprehensive, for other states. Private efforts depend on users reporting them and keeping info up to date. Our city had a RV park on the river near the edge of town, shut it dow permanently when it became meth lab central. Cost of law enforcement outweighed any possible benefit to city of giving visitors an almost free place to stay.

We've stayed in some very nice ones and also county parks. If you're on the road, try Googling for the next city and go to their Chamber site. Sometimes they list accommodations. We have also used all the above-mentioned guides. Good traveling to you!

A lot of city/county parks are listed in Don Wright's Free Campgrounds books, eastern & western edition (available on Amazon) We stayed in many that are listed. They are not all free but cheap.

Really enjoyed camping at Newport News City Park (Virginia, convenient to Williamsburg). Complete shade in deep woods, sites well spaced out. This is a model of what a city park should be: rv & tent camping, picnicing, bike trails, hiking trails with NO BIKES, fishing lake, boy scout primitive camping deep in woods, all kinds of activities: gold, archery range, disk golf, horse show area.

The campground is in thick woods and across the lake from "activities".
