Cross country trip

I am in the early planning stages of a cross country trip next summer. I will be leaving from Calgary and want to head for the east coast going through the states on the way down and through Canada on the way back. The stops that interest me are Minneapolis to see the Mall of America, Chicago and New York city before crossing the border to head for New Brunswick.

Could anyone advise of any good campgrounds close to the Mall of America, close to Chicago and close to New York City. I will be travelling with my husband and two small dogs (toy breeds about 10 pounds each) and we will be pulling our 29 foot travel trailer. New York seems to be a hard place to find campgrounds, especially since I do not want to leave the dogs in the trailer for more than 6 hours or so. Also is there any roads that I should avoid pulling the trailer. This is a once in a lifetime trip as I don't often get this much time off work. I will be taking approximately 5 to 6 weeks for this trip.

Thanks for all your help.
  • We stayed at Newburgh NY KOA. Very nice park. You can either drive a few miles to Beacon NY and take the train into NYC, or the park has a tour bus that leaves directly from the park. Pricey but well worth it. We were gone 12 hours. From their website: Dog Walking Service (available with donation to KOA Care Camps)
Another place to visit is Dearborn Michigan, The Henry Ford Museum and Ford Factory tour. One campground nearest is Detroit Greenfield RV Park.
  • Half way between Chicago and Milwaukee is Illinois Beach State Park.

    $25 per night.

Close to commuter train to Chicago.

25 Minutes to Six Flags - Great America.

25 minutes to Gurnee Mills outlet mall.

25 minutes to Jelly Belly plant (free tours)

25 minutes to Kenosha museums and the '50s vintage Green Hornet street car line.
  • For New York City you might check out Liberty Marina and RV Park in Jersey City, NJ. Not a great rv park, but a great location. Just a fairly short walk to a train that takes you under the Hudson River to the World Trade Center where you can board a subway to the rest of the city. Have a great trip.
  • Twin Cities, MN Lebanon Hills Campground in Apple Valley, MN. They are located near Minnesota Zoo and the Mall Of America. 12100 Johnny Cake Ridge Road in Apple Valley MN. Campgrounds

It would not be to far to drive to the Mall from there. Apple Valley is about 20 miles south of the Twin Cities and just 10 minutes south of the Mall of America (at least that is what the zoo web site has listed). http://www.exploreminnesota.com/places-to-stay/1251/lebanon-hills-campground/details.aspx
  • Another campground for visiting New York City is the Croton Point Park. While it is 30 miles north of the city, is is close (a long walk or short drive) from the railroad station that takes 45 minutes to get to Grand Central Station. It is a county park. While there, drive up Rt 129 & visit Croton Dam Park.
