Days for Boston area?

We stay at Boston Minuteman and they can direct to the commuter rail nearby to go to Boston. This though will place you 30 minutes north and west of bean town. If you wish to visit further south then Normandy Farms might be better for you. There is an aweful lot to do and see, so plan your days. 12 Days is not enough to do it all. In addition we have stayed on Cape Cod and there is a good CG just north of Falmouth. Cape Cod Camping Resort. From there you can do the entire Cape, Ferry to Marthas Vineyard, Rhode Island as well as areas south of Boston. Boston was only 1 1/2 hours from the cg as we brought our daughter to college there and stayed in Cape Cod. If you go to Cape Cod in Falmouth is a little restaurant down an alley called Shuckers. Biggest best lobster roll I have ever had! At the other end of the Cape in P Town take the whale watch tour and you will see them.This year we are considering Rhode Island and want to do Newport etc. Happy Trails

Since we are coming from WA, this is likely to be a "see it all once" trip. Currently, we are planning to come down the coast to Boston and then move to the Bar Harbor area for a few days. We are figuring Normandy Farms for 12 days (?) to cover the area through Newport Rhode Island, providence, Lexington & Concord. We have planned 4 nights for Bar Harbor area. We don't know if Martha's Vineyard is worth the time or $.

Nobody answered your question I would say you need quite a few days Try not to do it all in one trip see what's important to you and see the rest on another trip

We've visited Boston several times but have never camped. Our daughter and son in law live there. As for how many days, it depends on how complete you want your trip to be. We keep finding new things every time we go. The Freedom Trail hits all of the highlights of downtown Boston but I have found it to be too long to walk the whole thing in a day and do justice to all the sights. We really liked the JFK musuem. Harvard has a very good natural history museum. Salem struck us as being touristy. If you decide to drive up to Gloucester, take the time to drive around the east coast on Atlantic Dr. and up to Rockport/ Halibut State park. The views were really enjoyable. Driving in Boston is difficult. There are many one way streets with the direction sometimes changing block to block and parking is an issue. The good news is they have a good and safe public transportation system. Good luck and enjoy!

But where do you camp? We have a friend in Boston and would really like to see her, but it's a long drive for us. Any near by campgrounds?

We camped at Normandy Farms; others seem to like Minuteman. Both are rather far out, but that's often true of big cities, especially in th east. Open land close to downtown was built up 100 years ago or more.

Did you mention WHEN you will be in Boston? Sorry if I missed that info..
We are on the Cape for the summer. Last summer our son and friend came up and we did Boston 1 day in July. The Hop On/Off trolley was full at every stop. People were afraid to get off as you could not get on when the trolley stopped to pick you up.
But have taken it lots of other times in lots of cities, and it is definitely the way to go.

Hopefully you have time to read some books first before you come or see the show on John Adams done by HBO? SHOWTIME? Etc a few years back..

How deep is your interest in history? You've already decided there are places you wouldn't care about. Highlights for tourists can be a couple of days, but if really interested in history, Boston and the parts of New England easily reached from there can be worth years of exploration.

I'm going twice this Fall, allowing a week the first time, 2-4 days the second, but not taking the RV, it just doesn't work for the way I visit cities. Depends a lot on the city, either a couple of days is enough, or it leads to coming back again and again for a week at a time, a month at a time, and sometimes moving there for a couple of years to explore a place. Boston can be one of those "move there for a while" places if your U.S. history interest is high.

It's been a few years, but our favorite memories of Boston include:
USS Constitution & Freedom Trail
Eating at one of the many family restaurants in the North End
Walking around the waterfront
Eating at Legal Seafood (beware - $$$)
Duck Boat tour - we had a really informative & humorous driver / guide
In Essex, we took a river tour. Interesting history there.
Skipped Salem & the witch history
Stayed in Gloucester & took the rail to North Station and walked from there.
