Does this sound okay? Lassen/Redwoods plans

I'm almost ready to make reservations for my first real long camping adventure with my 18' TT. My farthest trip last summer was about 400 miles and about a week in length.

The plan is to stop in Klamath Falls OR to visit the grandparents and then hit Lassen NP for two nights. Next, we take one day to explore the Avenue of the Giants and two days to explore the northern redwoods. After that, we'll head up the Oregon Coast and back to home.

Manzanita Lake was recommended in Lassen NP. I was also wondering about Summit Lake CG?

I was thinking I'd take Hwy 299 to Hwy 101. (I read somewhere Hwy 36 is narrow and has lots of sharp corners.) If I take Hwy 299, I thought it would make sense to drop the trailer off near Arcata since we'll be heading to the northern Redwoods the next day. We plan to have hookups that day so we can be sure and charge the TT's battery. The KOA in Eureka looks like a pretty safe bet, but maybe there's something closer to the junction of 299 and 101?

For the next night, Prairie Creek Campground was recommended. The night after that could be Prairie Creek again or somewhere north- even boondocking at a Northern CA Casino or something.

Do these campgrounds sound like good choices given what's available in the area? Any other advice or recommendations?

Thanks all,

Jeff
  • Manzanita Lake CG is excellent with mostly pull thru sites. We spent 5 days there a few years ago. Don't know anything about Summit lake. Lassen is one of those little known gems in the park service. Lots to do and see there and half the park was still snowed in when we were there in July.

We ran into one of those rare unpleasant campers that you run into about every 5 years or so. Our fridge wouldn't run on propane so we were running our Honda 2K during generator hours when we were in the CG. She ran over to complain repeatedly to the CG Host who came over to complain to us. I asked her what the problem was with running a quiet generator during designated periods was? And she went away. The problem packed up and left...geez. But it was still a great spot to camp.

We took 299 across to the 101 and it was OK. We stayed at the Crescent City KOA which was OK but nothing special.
  • Lava Beds

Some interesting Indian history in this park just North of Lassen that is worth a day at least. The Lava flows make some beautiful caves that can be explored. The park supplied helmets and flashlights when we went many years ago.

With that length of TT you will be able to find many places to stay. I really miss our shorter RV's.

Childs Meadows was a great campground very close to one of Lassen's entrances.
  • Manzanita is fine. When you get to the coast via 299 I would recommend mad river rapids RV park for a stop over for your day trip south. To the north, yes, Prairie Creek is our fave. Space 33 is a small drive thru along the creek. Jedediah smith state park is also a nice stop heading north.
  • Plenty of rv parks in McKinleyville as you hit 101 from 299. Just go north at the intersection.
  • I will add my two cents with another comment about manzanita CG. We stayed there a few years ago and totally enjoyed the camp.
