We are thinking about going south by way of 395 and stopping at Death Valley - Maybe... depending on the weather.
Need a stopping spot somewhere along the way for overnight. Suggestions?

I should have mentioned that Von's generally (according to gasbuddy) has the lowest diesel price in that area. You could also check out Paiute Palace Gas Station.

Von's is even lower if you have their club card discount points.

Lone Pine - Tuttle Creek Campground - it's a BLM campground, off of Cottonwood Road (I think). $5.00/night. Primitive. Dirt. Not much shade. All sites large, most not perfectly level - some worse than others. Creek runs through. Great fishing during fishing season.

Mammoth/June - Glass Creek. Free NFS. Primitive. Large sites. No water (get water at the rest area just south).

We have stayed in one of the Brown's lots at Christmas time, not much open and you register and leave check/cash in envelope you drop. Have also stayed at Boulder creek either is fine for overnight. Used to travel through going to in-laws that lived in Elko and then when son was stationed at Mountain Home ID>

We have done the route many times and stay at Boulder Creek in Lone Pine, Mono Vista in Lee Vining and Likely RV in Likely. Reno area is always a toss up.

Directly opposite Schatt's Bakery is a small street leading to an RV parking area which is presumably only for daytime use

It leads to a a park and parking lot, and it has certainly worked for me for daytime use. Parked in there, walked across to Schatt's, brought lunch back to the park and ate at picnic bench.

As for Von's I haven't stayed at night, but what I see in the parking lot leads me to believe some are spending the night there.

The parking area for Von's is quite large, also. I can't say whether overnighting there would be acceptable.

I've stayed in Browns Bishop campground, Highlands in Bishop and Boulder Creek in Lone Pine for overnight stops. My favorite of the three is Boulder Creek but the others are decent enough. At Mammoth I prefer to stay in the NFS campgrounds, but found Mammoth Mountain RV park to be fine if you need hookups.

A few others which I may try is the Bishop Fairgrounds rv park, and the rather low rated JDiamond Mobile Ranch-due to it's location next to Schatts Bakery ๐Ÿ™‚

The Brown's Town RV Park/CG on the south side of Bishop was nice. Fuel up before you get anywhere near Lee Vining/Mono lake as they have some of the highest gas prices in the country. It gets a little better once you get down to Bishop and Lone Pine.

:C

Unless things have changed since I lived in Bishop (5 years ago), Browns town closes for the winter. Paiute palace also has a parking area for RV's. I don't think they charge. You just have tell them you are there.

Thanks for the update. We were there in late August. Do you know when they reopen? :h

Not sure when they open but They should be open for fishing opener in April. Browns hardware on wye road owns it. A call to them may answer your questions.

We like Topaz Lodge, 20 miles south of Gardnerville. Easy diesel access and great restaurant. RV park is around $25 and easy in out. Nice view of Topaz Lake

We travel 395 every Sept and find a good spot to layover for a day or two is Highlands RV -which is directly off 395 in Bishop. They have a web site. Its near Von's supermarket, which many RV's use like a Wal-Mart (free overnite) We just prefer FHU. Piaute Palace,an Indian gaming establishment and gas station, has the best gas prices and it's just a half block from Highlands. Two must do's while in Bishop: visit Eric Schatt's Bakery and drive the speed limit! Can't stress the latter enough and the former is world famous bakery. It's always crowded but well worth the time.

Mammoth Lakes RV Park is quite good, and its just inside the city limits.
