It takes time, but if you simply do a Google search with the name of the closest city or town on your route, you'll get "hits" for the various campgrounds in the area. Then you simply have to check them out on the internet.
We just went through this looking for a reliable campground near AVA, Missouri that wasn't "all male, over 21, and clothing optional". But we found one.
Search on: for example: "Kansas City, Missouri, campground"... and you'll get "hits". Then search them out. Guides are nice, and I really like using the KOA and the Good Sam campground finder for theirs. But, they are not everywhere. Google IS everywhere, and if nothing else, it will return Yellow Pages results also if they don't have a web site.
Good luck! Watch out for those "clothing free" sites. I'm sure you don't want any surprises when you check in! (heee, heee!)
I just did a campground search for Kansas City and didn't find any clothing optional campgrounds. Where are they? LOL I live here and never heard of such a thing. Let me know when your coming and I might be able to recommend a campground.
Found Smithville Lake near Kansas City (no, not clothing optional). We'll be there at the end of June. Same trip well be in AVA Missouri. Found Missouri Park Campground in Mountain Grove.
(FYI, the one in Ava is called Catcus Canyon Campground.
Smithville lake is our weekend go to campground! It is only about 15 miles from home. If you like wine try the Pagoda Ridge winery just outside of Smithville. In the summer they serve a slushy drink made with wine. Awesome!!! Would love to meet and greet if you have the time.
