Grand Canyon Caverns

I was just searching here about Carlsbad Caverns and found a reference to the Grand Canyon Caverns. This sounds interesting. We are going to be visiting Holbrook Az. to check out the Petrified Forest, then we were going to head north toward Page. However this place sounds interesting, didn't plan on continuing West. Anyone have a favorite campground in the area and opinions on this location? We will be in that warm area in mid July.
  • GC Caverns is worth the stop. Very good tour. There is even a hotel room built deep inside the cavern albeit very expensive.

While inside the caverns remain cool, outside during the summer months can be rather hot. A better choice would be to stay at Grand Canyon Railway RV park in Williams and make a day trip to the caverns. Not far from the caverns is Keepers of the Wild animal sanctuary that's a fun stop.

Williams is at 7,000 feet and is in the cooler forested pines. In Williams is Bearizona drive thru animal park and walking zoo. Well worth a visit. Theres also a deer petting zoo nearby thats fun.
  • Thanks Folks. Gonzo42 That Meteor Crater is a great addition and right in the area. I appreciate the suggestion.
  • We were there about 4 years ago and enjoyed it. However be aware the air temp is at 55 F ALL THE TIME, so wear a jacket and closed shoes.

No, its not as fabulous as Carlsbad. We visited both of these, plus Meteor Crater, Grand Canyon south rim, Petrified Forest and Painted Desert.

I called it the Tour of the Big Holes in the Ground.

From the discrimination and pictures it's a dry cavern so no stalagmites or stalagmites...not in the same league as Carlsbad.
  • Never heard of the place but they have a RV park:

It would be interesting to hear from someone who's been there and can compare it to Carlsbad Nat'l Park or our favorite, Kartchner Caverns State Park near Tucson, AZ. Kartchner is a living cave meaning it's still dripping and growing. Beautiful tour - we gave them.
