Grand Marais, Mn.

Just booked 4 nights at the city campground in Grand Marais, Mn. Am I going to like it? Have been to the town many years ago but really don't know anything about the campground. I gave up on trying to find any elec. sites at the campgrounds along the shore. The town looks interesting and any hikes (under 6 miles) we shouldn't miss?
  • My favorite campground in Minnesota, they even have cable now - try to get there early several of the water front sites are not reserveable but you can upgrade at no added cost when you get there

Many waterfalls this one is north of town on the border with canada

    View from out campsite 6/14/15

Note Worlds best Donuts are the best ever - only hope they are still open for the season
  • We stay here for a couple of weeks every July. It will be cool! The CG is right on the lake with a variety of ways to enjoy the lake. There is a pebble beach, a picnic and boat launch area on the harbor, and a staircase that leads to a beautiful perch atop the rocky outcrops. Short hikes available at the CG (there is a lookout point only a short hike up the hill from the CG) include nearby Cascade River SP (which has electric sites now), CR Magney and Grand Portage SP (no camping). Be sure to do all 3, very short scenic hikes. The CG is older but has good sites many with full HU. Staff are friendly. Be sure to eat at the Dockside, my favorite spot for fish and chips in GM. Angry Trout also VG. Have a great time!I recommend brunch (Sunday) at nearby Naniboujou - it is expensive but VG.
  • Hopefully you will like it, the cg is older and most of the sites are fairly tight, sites were level, parking is gravel and some are grass, but you are right on the lake, you can walk up town to shop and eat. There might be some road noise as the cg is pretty close to Hwy 61. It's been several years since I stayed there, I enjoyed the cg and I'm sure they have made improvements. It is owned by the city and there is an indoor pool/community center at the cg. It's excellent base for visiting the Gunflint trail, watch out for moose. Superior Hiking trail ends in Grand Marais. Fall color is starting, so it should be beautiful in the next couple of weeks.
  • That's a nice area, and Grand Marais is well situated for day trips up and down the shoreline highway to the state parks, as well as the Gunflint Trail into the woods. Be sure to walk out to Artist's Point and enjoy the views. Most of the state parks have nice, scenic trails and waterfalls. Sorry I can't speak about the CG itself, though.
