JohnAndSusan, Not sure how "big" your rig is or how long you're staying. We use a lot of the Utah State Parks in our 40ff DP with a dolly. The camp maps and descriptions provide the sizes. Several of the parks are handy to SLC and less than an hours drive in the toad.

Thanks for the comments on the need for reservations. I will give them a call and see if our travel time will be a problem.

Brigham City KOA is in a good location, but is a bit of a dive of an RV park.

Look north about 45 min - KOA in Brigham City. Away from SLC rush. Head farther north to visit Promontory Point - site of the "Golden Spike" joining East and West by rail. VERY nicely done NPS site (no on-site camping...). ST

The park is also right by the Utah State Fair on the fairgrounds. A couple times a year they have things going on. This year the fair is September 10-20, 2015.

No the OP but we are heading through SLC on our way west to Oregon and Washington. Is the SLC KOA a busy campground that I should make prior reservations for or can you usually get a site if you call in the morning. We are traveling cross country and our timeframe is fluid as I never know for sure how far we will get each day. We usually travel without reservations.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

As others said, the KOA in SLC is nice. There is a shuttle to temple square or you can take the light rail train stop just outside the park -- 10 minute ride to downtown. There is also a jogging path/walking area just outside the back fence from what I remember.

If you are staying there, a visit to temple square is worth it. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir practices on Thursday nights and part of the practice is usually open to spectators. The Sunday morning broadcast is also open to spectators (is that the right word? hehe). Depending on the time of year, there are also concerts in the assembly hall building as well put on by groups from around Utah.

Oh, and the LDS church has a massive genealogy library. They will even sit down with you and help you get started. Many people from around the world visit the library.

Across the street from temple square is the new City Creek shopping center which is very nice. There are other concert venues in this area as well... the Utah Jazz NBA arena, Capital Theater, Abravanel Hall, opera/ballet, broadway shows, planetarium (laser pink floyd on weekends!), etc. Shopping at City Creek or The Gateway (movie theater here too).

If you end up in Utah Valley, I could suggest ideas too.

Park City is an easy drive from SLC, and the Olympics center is a really nice place to visit. In the warm months they practice ski jumps into a big pool.

We usually stay at Mountain Shadows in Sandy (just South of downtown; right off the Interstate; and next to CW). FHU spaces are big enough, although you will get to know your neighbors. We have family in West Valley, so don't spend much time at the trailer.

We stayed at the Keep-On-Adding the first time we were in SLC and were not impressed. May if we had kids with us, but we don't.

I think MS is slightly cheaper than KOA and I find the staff friendlier. (Very nice laundry room, by the way.)

Reservations are almost required at either place. If you are not familiar with the Mormon Church's calendar, they frequently schedule assembly events for members from all over the Mountain West. Every RV space in the valley fills up without warning.

(A couple of years ago somebody said that Cherry Hill was out of business????)
