ideas for dog walkable towns adjacent to RV c.g.

we mostly enjoy walking our three dogs when going RVing. we mainly hit nearby state parks because they are big enough to take long walks.

would like to find some other nearby places that afford hour+ walks that maybe include shops and restaurants - one of us goes in while other and dogs wait outside - in a dog-walking friendly town where the RV park is somewhat integral (easy walking access) to the town.

2 of the 3 dogs are kinda unsettled in the moving RV, so closer proximity to baton rouge is desired (not much more than 4 hours away).

for example, we go to fountainbleau s.p. which is connected to a nice walkable small town, mandeville, by 3 miles of converted rail-to-bikepath. the walk is too far to include strolling the town's streets.

i am thinking of goliad, tx and new glarus, ws as good examples of where the RV park is close to points of interest in the walkable town.

thanks for any ideas.
  • another good example of what i mean was grand marais, mn.

i asked something similar on this forum several years back, and palacious, tx was suggested. it is a good many hours off, and when i have looked at its layout, the c.g. was not a safe pedestrian stroll to town.

goliad has a paved walkway from c.g. to town. IIRC, it is the site of the cinquo de mayo battle.
  • If you figure out how to get from Baton Rouge to Bar Harbor in 4 hours, let me know. NO, my fiver will not fit as check baggage on United.

Since my next trip is Orlando-Bar Harbor-Bay of Fundy-Montreal-Orlando, you can save me a BUNCH of time.
  • We stayed at Goliad in February and enjoyed it very much. We have a dog and found good walking within the park, but did not think of walking into town. There is a good trail between the state park and the Presidio Bahia where Fannin and his men were held until the massacre.
    Goliad State Park

We have stayed several times (beginning in 1962) at Fontainbleau, and in more recent days at Fairview/Riverside near Madisonville.

Tyler state park has great trails for the dog, but clearly not near enough to walk into town.
  • 3 dogs and cities aren't going to be ideal, stick with the campgrounds.
