our very first camping trip with our TT and also first time to St. Augustine fl. We had reservations to KOA on pope rd. We had planned to try the ghost tours but ended up see'ing only one due to the concert which closed the entire town down during the night.

The CG review was 3.5 from what we read (after), and seemed the majority of low scores was for CS.

We got there during weekday, hectic with thunderstorms/lightning and rain which made visibility so bad, I dropped down to 5 - 10 mph as I couldn't see in front of me and but the traffic was still moving so I didn't want to stop and get hit from behind.

But we got to the KOA on pope rd. The person checking us in, gave us a very very fast and brief info on the park; internet, camp site, etc., then passing us some papers/brochures and have a nice day.

Go back to truck and wife and I look at the camp layout and where she said to go and see how we can get there. We do find it and setup, its different than our CG where we stay (we just started fulltime), so after un-hitch and set up leveling, we have to undo it as our water pipe is diff place than where it is in our CG, and our hose doesn't reach. Remove blocks, lift up levelers, Re-hitch truck, adjust some, park, and do it all over again but we have water hooked up.

After we found out that the town will shut down trf due to concert, and no tours are being held, we went to KOA office and see if we can get any info or recommendations on things to do. the conversation went sort of like:
Q on things to do/see outside of the town
A don't know
Q any place close by to see
A don't know
and so on.../

We made do though, we drove around, found some great food places to eat, brought some clothes and good time at beach.

weekend, the sewer side where we were parked backed up, and everyone parked on the sites on that line got backed up big time. omg the smell, it was so bad, some people walked to office and we followed and told them our site as flooding and it was smelling bad.

I guess they fixed it as the flooding seemed to stop but the pool of brown water and the smell is still there. it took a while before the flood drained back to ground but the smell still lingered, and my sewer hose was laying in that pool of water!! omg. I spent a while using whatever cleaner I had to sanitize my hose wheww. I threw away the shoes I wore while cleaning up that area too as I had to step in that place (after flood gone), to clean up my things which got wet from that pool.

I said guessed they fixed it, as they did not come around to say it was okay to drain our black/grey tanks. I walked around and knocked on the door of other campers in that area to see if it was good to go. They didn't know either, but said looks like it and they will try but go slow in case.

The rubbish pickup was timely and the CG is close by to lots of things, but if the person working there is not helpful, have your map/gps onhand, and just drive : )

I would give this CG a 3, and our CG where we fulltime at definitely
beats this koa in all area's hands down.

that's our take from our first camping trip with our TT and hope to visit other CG soon.

For the last 10 years we go to Bryn Mawr.....right on the ocean, great staff, new pool and hot tub, new showers very nice.....The only warning is the spots can be tight but spring for the extra $$ and get an ocean front site which are easy to get in and out of even for the biggest rigs...mine is 45 feet and no problem.

We're heading to St. Augustine for Thanksgiving this year. Thanks for the information. I made reservations at Stagecoach RV park. It's convenient to the in-laws and it's NOT a KOA.

I think you'll find most repeat campers go to North Beach Camp Resort for: spacious sites separated by vegetation, three restaurants within walking distance, the Atlantic Ocean on one end and the IntraCoastal Waterway on the other, and a friendly staff willing to help. Camp on!

North Beach RV is a better option in St Augustine

When in St. Augustine, we normally stay at North Beach RV .. but the last time we decided to go to the KOA as we had a new coach and I didn't want to be on the sand at North Beach on our first trip. The KOA on Pope Rd has paved interior roads. Other than that, nothing special. We tried to use our KOA Value Card points when we checked in, but the staff member didn't know how to do that. We ended up contacting KOA HQ and they called the CG and walked the staff member through the process.

That doesn't sound like anyplace I'd want to stay either. We were in St. Augustine the end of July and stayed at Bryn Mawr RV Resort. The sites are a bit snug but the place is right on the ocean with easy beach access and the staff is very accommodating. It also has security gates for which they give you a coded card so you can come and go. It's on A1A if I recall and fairly close to restaurants and a decent drive into the old part of town. We did the Ghost Tour riding in a hearse and the guide took us to some places he doesn't always take everyone (he said) and we found it very interesting. I had researched restaurants before we left and there are a number of good ones and we tried almost all of them. Good luck on your next camping trip.
