Does anyone have any experience renting a car for the high season in south Florida, Jan - mid-April? Availability? Costs? Thanks in advance.

Quite a few years ago we needed/wanted to rent a car for a month in the Orlando area. After finding outrageous prices from rental car companies we found & called a 'Rent a Wreck' (may have been the actual name) type company. We had used the same type at home after an auto accident while waiting for insce. to be sorted out. Their prices were great but there was a mileage limit (very generous). The car was not a wreck at all, it was 2 years old, from a rental car business.

We were very pleased with the results and had no problems at all with the car.

Boy do you have that right!
The used cars in Florida are CHEAP. Good for what you need. You can pick up one for less than the exorbitant prices of long term rentals in Fl. And if you buy one right you most likely will even make a few bucks when you sell it.

But it was bad for me. I decided to sell my toad and MH 'after' I got to Florida WHAT a mistake. Going to take 10's of 1,000 dollars hit on my MH and the toad well I practically had to give it away all set up to tow too. Car prices are real low here. At least compared to up north where I come from.

Just for a point of reference, back in 2011 we rented a sub-compact in high season in Mytle Beach for two weeks; it was $140/week.

Check with your insurance - they may not cover you for a long term rental. There is usually a certain number of days allowed. In the absence of your own policy providing coverage, on top of the rental fee you would need the daily insurance which is not cheap. I would think this would be to costly to do.

All I can tell you is I tried renting a car in the Leesburg area that is sorta close to Disney.....it was almost 2 1/2 times the price I pay for a rental up North. And half of the ones that I called didn't have a car available.

And do NOT call the 800 number for the big name rental agency's. They will have you running all over only to find out when you get there there is no car available. CALL the 'direct' number to the office in the town you want to rent from.
