Mount Jackson Va

I hope this is placed in the right forum.
We are planning a trip to Mt Jackson/Shenandoah Valley, and are looking for budget friendly ideas. We plan on going to the Civil War Museum/Farm
and a cavern--not sure which on. :h
We were going to do Skyline Drive--but we are only going to be there a about a week and would only do the drive once so I don't want to pay for 1 day.
Any other "park" or such around you know a nice place to picnic and see nature?

Thanks for any ideas and such!!
  • wow guys thanks!!! im thinking were gonna try the new Shenandoah Family Campground :C

you guys gave me some good ideas! i like the little things, like off the beaten path, we went somewhere before and stumbled on a few pretty neat stores!

I searched Shenandoah and Mt Jackson and didn't even think to search the little towns around them :S
  • We just stayed at Endless Caverns RV Resort in June. Excellent campground and the Endless Caverns are right on the property. We had a guided tour and it was just our family of 4. Much less commercialized than Luray Caverns but very nice caverns.
  • West of Mt. Jackson on route 263 is Bryce Resort in Basye, VA. They have a swimming lake with a hiking trail around it. I think you can rent paddle boats. There's also a golf course.
  • Assuming you are camping, you may want to stay at Shenandoah River State Park between Front Royal and Luray, the KOA or Yogi Bear in Luray, or the KOA or Endless Caverns at New Market. Most of those places will give you easy access to the Skyline Drive, several caverns, and quite a number of Civil War battle sites.
  • Luray Caverns is a good cave to visit and if you like antiques, galleries, etc. check out Edinburg just up the road a few miles and Woodstock which has lots of great restaurants and live entertainment. If you are into wine, there are many good wineries in the Mt. Jackson area. As for nature and picnics, you will be in and out of the George Washington National Forest so there are all kinds of picnic areas. Just remember there are not many passes running West-East across the moumtain so check maps before you venture out as it may be quite a drive to get from point A to point B.

If you haven't planned on it, stop at Harpers Ferry WV National Park. $10.00 per car and lots to see and do. The Appalachian Trail runs through Harpers Ferry. A short walk along the trail from the lower town to the C&O Canal will take you from West Virginia to Maryland in just a few minutes. We stayed at the KOA.

Double ditto on Harpers Ferry and the C&O.

On another trip or perhaps on this one you might enjoy the A. C. Stickley Bed and Breakfast in Strasburg, VA. We took a side trip and accidentally discovered this sweet little spot.

  • From Mount Jackson take Route 11 South towards New Market. It's about 8 miles. There are some good antique shops and also more Civil War history. Then Take Route 211 East towards Luray. It's about 14 miles and you cross over the mountain. Luray has a wonderful walkway along a stream through town, a reptile zoo for the kiddies (and you) and several other attactions. Google Luray VA and you will see a variety of things to do that are inexpensive.
