The only thing east of Jacob Lake is Vermilion Cliffs. But there are a lot of NF roads coming off Alt 89. We've been down some of them and you can end up right on the rim of one of the canyons.
Look at that image and the ones
following it in the folder. I thought this was House Rock road but it apparently is not, that goes north into Vermilion Cliffs. So I'm not sure what the road name is just look for the sign in the first photo about off Alt 89. We went about far south as you can then took a left turn and ended up on the canyon rim. There were boondockers so I think that area is open to camping. What the road/weather conditions will be is anyone's guess.
You can see the Vermillion Cliffs in the truck mirror on that image on the other side of Alt 89. I cannot blow that image up enough to read a road name if there is one on the map.
I got on Google Maps, the Road is Buffalo Ranch Road.
I'm not sure if this will work but you can see the sign off Alt 89. Thats also FR 220 follow it down to FR 8910 and that around to the Buck Farm spur which is right on the canyon rim.
Right hereThose gravel roads were in pretty good condition when we went thru, and there is no doubt that we could have pulled our 5ver down that road at the time. But I'd always make a trip thru w/o the camper first to scope out the conditions. It would be a spectacular place to camp and we plan to do just that next summer. I believe it is quite a bit lower than the north rim area so there might not be a lot of snow.
I found part of the Trip in my AZ Backroads and 4WD book and they say the altitude runs from 5500 to 8000 ft. They don't follow the path I show above and you can come in the back way since 8910 intersects Alt 89 about 12-15 miles after Bucks Farms
