Ocean Waves Campground, NC

Planning a trip from St Louis to the Hatteras up to Assateague State Park and then returning home. We camp in a B (SportsMobile converted van) so we can fit most places and only need electric and clean facilities. My question is, since our timing is really iffy (some where early to mid June), and we would like to spend a night or two at Ocean Waves CG do you think reservations are a must? Or will we be out in the cold? I couldn't find a reservation site on line and hesitate to call or email them to ask if they project any openings then. A - how are they to know (other than historically) and B - any marketeer worth their salt would say to reserve now, "we're filling fast".
Anyone out there have any knowledge?

thanks

Thanks for all the great info and help, but we decided to cancel this trip or at least abbreviate it. We do have a limited time table and are coming off a series of family situations and just won't feel like dealing with waiting for ferries, over cramped campgrounds, and in general the east coast hustle & bustle that we perceive as the norm. One day when things settle down and we have more leisure time to enjoy a relaxing trip at our whim rather than "fitting" it in, we'll get there.

Thanks all!

Another private campground with hookups thirty miles or so south of these is Frisco Woods. It is usually less crowded than the three big ones in Rodanthe (Camp Hatteras, KOA and Ocean Waves) and has a few sites directly on the water on the sound side. None of the OBX campgrounds, public or private, have sites on the ocean; there's a sand dune barrier between the cg and the water on all of them.

If all else fails, other than holiday weekends, you can usually get into any of the four Cape Hatteras Park Service campgrounds without any problem. The one at Frisco is actually our favorite, public or private. These don't have hookups but do offer showers (cold water only) and restrooms with flush johns.

I would send in a reservation NOW for the time you expect to be there along with a check for 54.00. One night deposit is required. You can type a short letter stating your rv size, slides if applicable, 30 or 50 amp required and how many people and pets.

They do fill up very fast and I would say you are looking at a 50/50 chance at this time.

Camp Hatteras is down the road and the KOA as well. They typically charge twice what O Waves is per night.

Pirateland is the one north of Ocean Waves. Truth be told, unless you can get a spot on the ocean, Ocean Waves is just a really really big RV parking lot. I expect the water park will be done by then and any sites near there would be noisy. I'd consider Huntington State Beach in Murrells Inlet, just south of Myrtle.

Can't believe everything you read on the internet :B Think you are confusing Ocean Waves in OBX with Ocean Lakes in Myrtle Beach. Not only a state apart but also equally far apart in relaxation.

I was there in April a couple of years back, made ressie by phone, but they were full the entire time we were there. Popular spot.

There is another larger RV park just north of Waves, whose name escapes me. Bigger, but less interesting appearing.

They take reservations for 2016 beginning Jan 1, 2015 - BY MAIL. Their office is closed till March 15th. Once the office is open, you can also make ressies by phone. Reservation form is on their web site and I believe the cg owner picks up the mail weekly and processes the requests and calls or emails you with a confirmation. I thought their web site was pretty clear as to their process.

I sent my monthly reservation in by mail and it has been confirmed.

Unless you make reservations it's very doubtful that you'll be staying at Ocean Waves. They fill up fast, and stay filled. They start taking reservations, I think, around March. Cape Hatteras KOA and Camp Hatteras are both close and much larger than Ocean Waves. Also not as nice though.
