Oshkosh EAA

My son and I are planning to go to Oshkosh in July and were thinking at staying at Camp Schuller on the EAA grounds. According to their website, sites are only 20x30 feet. Is this for real? My RV is a little longer than 30 feet, how do they handle the bigger rigs or do they? If we can't get in due to size/availability, our next bet was a campground in Omro, about 6 miles away. We would drive to the EAA each morning. How bad is the traffic if we drive? Thanks ahead of time for responses.

We did the EAA show a few years ago. Stayed a few nights out in one of the the hay fields. Length was not an issue. Width not much of an issue either. Much more room than some of the music festivals we have been to.

Noise is not much of an issue either. People respect quiet times, even in the 24hr genny area most all were shut off by midnight.

Just hope that it does not rain. Then the lanes between the campers become a mudfest & the entertainment changes from the sky to the ground as you watch people who can't drive dig holes in the muck with their wheels.

The weekends are the worst, with heavy traffic before and after the air show times. Heck, the air traffic after the air shows is really heavy. ๐Ÿ™‚ They line 'em up and take 'em off two at a time. Pretty funny watching a Lear jet taking off after a Piper Cub. ๐Ÿ™‚

My understanding is that they've opened the flight line up to people other than EAA members and guests. That could make it really crowded.

IIRC, Camp Schuller is just a grassy field, that fills up cheek-to-jowl at EAA time. We also stayed in the same CG that coolmom did, when it was still a KOA. Not a bad location, though traffic was pretty slow going to EAA in the morning.

Camp Schuller is pretty packed in width-wise. I couldn't see well enough to tell about length. LOTS of noisy generators running 24/7.

The traffic is only congested when everyone leaves at night or comes in for the afternoon air show. If you go earlier in the day it's not bad. There are shuttles for the parking lots. Do make a note of where you park, and tie some high-visibility thing to your antenna to mark the car. Even a white grocery bag is helpful in the dark. Take a flashlight or phone with a flashlight app. But DO absolutely stay to the end of the fireworks display. Well worth the traffic!

We stayed a the Breezy Hill RV park, formerly a KOA, in Fond du Lac. Well away from the noise & crowds, but about 20 minutes to Oshkosh. Very quiet nice campground up next to a cornfield, with some well-maintained seasonal sites. But call now for reservations! They do raise their prices some for EAA week.

ETA: There were a couple of nights with heavy rains while we were there. People where having to get their RVs towed out because of the mud. I would avoid Camp Schuller, it did not seem to be a pleasant experience.
