Report: Meriwether Lewis Campground, Hohenwald, TN

The campground sits on a hilltop and as I wrote this in early April many if not most sites have views through the trees in one or more directions. Once the trees fill out with the new leaves leaves of spring (they were still bare when I was there) those views will likely disappear--the campground is in a forest of deciduous trees.

Just a mile from the campground is the gravesite of and memorial to Meriwether Lewis of the famed Lewis and Clark Expedition also known as the Corps of Discovery. After that famed expedition, as Governor of the Louisiana Territory, Lewis traveled the Old Trace on his way to Washington D.C. and it is within a few steps of his gravesite that he met his untimely death by gunshot. It appears uncertain whether it was murder or suicide.

That which appears above are brief excerpts from the full report on my free blog which includes much more info about the campground, area history and a number of additional photos should you be interested. Many other campgrounds are reviewed on my blog along with boondocking sites, great photography, photo tips, travel reports and interviews with people I've met while full-timing over the past year. It's all red. If you like it look for the Follow Russ text entry field and type in you email address to receive free email notices when I post something new,

Today is also April 7, a few years to the day after you were here and I am at Meriwether still. Spring is a little later this year. Your photos should help people get a better idea of the place. Thanks for sharing.

We are looking forward to traveling down the Natchez Trace Parkway with our travel trailer. We have driven it so far in our Miata..but had to come back another way. We stopped at the Meriwether Lewis Memorial and had a short visit. Can't wait to try out the campground.

Bear in mind the season, if you have that luxury. Severe weather is more common in the spring and early summer. This may include tornados, high MPH straight line winds, and large hail. I sat through a watch for these just yesterday and let me tell you it is very scary. It's also a little early if you want things to look spring like. It still looks more like autumn or winter. I'm not sure about what weather is typical in late April or May but it would be prettier from the standpoint of new growth.

  • We stayed there one night last month. The host (from Michigan) was very entertaining as was another camper who had the same Arctic Fox model that we have. After setting up the rig at a nice, level site, I drove into Hohenwald (about 7 miles away) for gas. I highly recommend the Meriwether Lewis CG on the Natchez Trace.
  • We enjoyed our trip to Hohenwald TN as well. Went to the same attractions and others along that area of The Trace.
We stayed at Many Cedars Campground,a horse camp, situated at a curve on The Buffalo River that offers nice trails and horseback rides with your stay.Family owned, great people.
