We will be attending a family reunion in June so want to see if I can get some spots reserved soon.The reunion is going to be in the far northern part of Wisconsin. We want to visit Mackinac Island while up there and would just take Hwy 2 over to the area of St Ignace, MI and/or Evergreen Shores, MI. There are several places in and around Mackinaw City but for travel time, if we could get something in those areas would be helpful. Then we can just drive over to Mackinaw City if we want. I'm not finding a lot in that area of Michigan. Do any of you know or visited the area have some suggestions? Thanks!!

We stayed at this state park. Located at the north end of the bridge at St. IgnaceStraits State Park

Just slightly off topic but when in Mackinaw City be sure to have one or two of their Pasties; a local staple for the workers when the bridge was being built. Our favorite source is Mackinaw Pastie and Cookie Company on Huron Street. They also have frozen Pasties to take home.And see the video on how the bridge was built upstairs at Moma Mia's on the main drag in town close to the docks.

I second Straits State Park, cannot get any closer to the bridge and close to the ferry's We stay here every year when we head up north. There are even a few sites that have spectacular views of the straits and the bridge if you want to dry camp. Dan

If your visiting Mackinaw island, stay at the Tee Pee campground, they sell tickets for the boats to Mackinaw and the shuttle comes right to the campground.

Just with a quick look up. There are 13 CG's around St Ignace on the north side of the bridge and 11 CG's around Mackinaw City on the south side of the bridge. That's 24 CG's to choose from in just those 24 close CG's. Mackinaw Mill Creek Campground alone for instance has over 700 sites on more than 200 acres with over 1 mile of beach. Have fun choosing!

Only the thread OP knows what type sites they want and with having what hoohups. So many to thousands to choose from.

We just spent most of a week up in the Soo this past September and loved it. We stayed in the KOA on the Ontario side. There's so much to see and do up there, like the locks tour, the train tour, etc.

We had a comical series of ongoing Google/Yelp fails where every bar, restaurant, or POI we searched for was on the wrong side of the border, no matter which side we were on. We got to know the border agents pretty well.

If you get a chance, venture up to Sault Ste. Marie and stay at Aune Osborne campground.

Nice place right on the St. Mary's River where you can watch ore boats entering/exiting the Soo Locks. The boats are amazingly close so you get a real feel for their size. Nice restaurant just down the street called the Antlers with lots of atmosphere.

Only about 30 plus miles from St. Ignace.

The Tiki campground is north of St Ignace about 1 1/2 miles. They have some nice sites and are PA. We have stayed there several times. Some are in the trees and some are in the open. There is also a Casino with a park in Evergreen Shores. If you buy your tickets for the ferry, ask and they have discount packages for other sites on the island also. Straits State Park is limited in site size. there is a KOA in St Ignace and another park called Lakeshore. Hope this may help. Happy Trails Bert

We love camping in the UP and northern Michigan.

In the UP, check out Indian Lake SP, Jack Pine Campground, Union Bay CG in the Porcupine Mountains. Those three are my personal favorites in that area.

Near Mackinaw City, I'd opt for Wilderness SP. A real gem we discovered was Hoeft SP, on the Huron side and not real close to Mackinaw City but check it out someday.

Pasties date back to the Cornish miners who immigrated to the UP in the 19th century. A hot pastie wrapped in a cloth stayed warm until lunch time.

Lehto's west of St Ignace is superior, IMHO. But the best pasties are found in the Copper Country area of the northwest UP. The real thing contains rutabagas, btw. And if you put gravy on it, you are revealed as not a Yooper. Real Yoopers put ketchup on their pasties.

There is also a Casino in town that has electric hookups for low cost.
